In 2014 Sophie Hannah received wide-spread acclaim for penning an all-new mystery featuring Agatha Christie’s legendary hero Hercule Poirot, The Monogram Murders, an instant bestseller.  Reviews were outstanding, praising Hannah for her command of the character and voice.  So when the time came to write a new story, Sophie knew there was only one way she would write another book—even though she enjoyed writing the first so much—she knew she would need to have an idea that was clever and compelling enough to think, ‘This feels very Agatha-ish. Poirot MUST solve this case.’

And then it came to her, “…as if by magic (that really is how it felt!) an idea landed in my head. A motive for murder. It was incredibly simple—so simple, it almost seemed too obvious—and yet I didn’t think it had been done before.”

Why I want to read this book:

I am really looking forward to this book! I’m a huge fan of Poirot, and the plot description above sounds very much like something Christie might have written. The first book was indeed “clever and compelling.”

Poirot is more irritating in some books than in others, I find. I have to admit that while Hannah’s first Poirot mystery was well-crafted, it didn’t quite feel like a Poirot. But we’ll see how this one goes! I think they’re well worth reading even if they don’t quite have the Christie “voice.”

I’m on the hold list at the library for both the book and the audiobook—whichever comes in first! The lists are pretty long, though, so I have a while to wait.

I had mixed feelings about the first book Hannah did. It was a very good mystery, but not quite in the quintessential Christie/Poirot style. On the whole I liked it, and this plot sounds very Poirot-ish, so I’m hopeful.
