The HoHoHo Read-A-Thon starts in three weeks!

Well, just over three weeks, but close enough. It’s time to sign up and start thinking about what I’m going to read. I know I’m going to be pretty busy with both work and choruses that week, so my goal is to read 2 Christmas-themed books and listen to 1 audiobook (A Christmas Carol) during the read-a-thon. If I read more than that, great!

The rules are simple: read holiday- or Christmas-themed books. Kimberly has challenges and giveaways planned, and a Twitter party at the end of the week. It’s always a lot of fun, so pop over to her site and sign up!

 

Here are a few of the books that I’ll be choosing from. They’re not in any particular order, and as you can see, I’ve got plenty to pick from. There’s at least one in each of the genres I usually read: fantasy, mystery, and both historical and contemporary romance.  So no matter what mood I’m in, I ought to be able to find something that appeals to me! And they are all books I already own in one format or another, so I really ought to read them, don’t you think?

(By the way, I’ve read A Christmas Carol, but I’ve never listened to Jim Dale’s recording, and I really want to because he’s a great narrator. And anyway, it’s at least a decade or more since I read it. I’ve also read Ngaio Marsh’s Tied Up in Tinsel, but not for at least 15 years, so I’ve forgotten a lot of what happens.)

    This sounds like a fun challenge…and it looks like you have a lot of good books to choose fun!

    That’s a fun challenge! I’ve read the first Roderick Alleyn mystery, but the size of the series is intimidating. Would you say they need to be read in order?

      Actually, it’s one of the series that probably doesn’t need to be read in order, provided you can tolerate knowing some stuff about Alleyn’s romantic/family life out of order. A good half of the books don’t mention his wife, or she only appears as a minor character. But he meets her and falls in love with her in Artists in Crime, proposes in Death in a White Tie, and she plays a major role in Final Curtain, Spinsters in Jeopardy, A Clutch of Constables (where she’s the main character), and Photo Finish. And Ricky, their son, has a major part in Last Ditch. Frankly, I read them out of order (as I could find them in used bookstores) and did fine. Oh, there are two that are best read in order: Killer Dolphin and Light Thickens, because one of the main characters, Peregrine Jay, appears in both, and there are references to the first book in the second one. (Those are also two of my favorites.)

      If you do read them in order, the list is on Wikipedia. And the first book isn’t quite typical of the rest, so if you’re not crazy about it, try one of the ones from the middle of her career.

      Have fun! I almost envy you; I will never again read a Ngaio Marsh for the first time. (I’ve already read them all at least once, and some of them two, three, even five times.)
