Make Me Read It! (a read-a-thon)

June 15, 2016 Challenges 49

The Make Me Read It Read-A-Thon is hosted by Ely @ Tea and Titles and  Val @ The Innocent Smiley and runs July 9-16, 2016

I’m joining the Make Me Read It Read-A-Thon!

Basically, this is a readathon where you, gentle reader, get to choose what I will read.

So how does this work?

Look at the books you own, either physical, e-book or ones you’ve borrowed from the library and pick out a few you really want to read, or feel like you should read. It’s up to you how many you pick, personally I’d pick a few more than you expect to be able to read in a week. Example: if you think you’ll only read two, pick out five books or if you think you can read seven, pick out ten.

Make a list of these books on your blog, or make a video, or a Goodreads shelf or post a picture on Instagram—whatever is easiest for you. Then get friends, other bloggers/booktubers etc. to vote on which books you HAVE to read.

When the read-a-thon comes along, you read the books in the order of most votes. For example, if one book gets 10 votes—you read that first, then the one that got 7 and so on. If there’s a tie, then it’s your preference. The goal is to read as many as possible.

The read-a-thon will take place from the 9th to the 16th of July in your timezone. You can start anytime you want on the 9th, so just fit it around whatever works for you! As for the voting, that’s up to you too! Just remember to link your post/photo/video/tweet in the linky at the end of this post so everyone can vote on it!

Use  the hashtag #MakeMeRead on Twitter and Instagram.

I’ve decided to focus on fantasy novels, because I haven’t been reading enough of them recently. Here are the options. All are books I own, either in print or ebook format, but haven’t read yet. (Title links go to Goodreads.)

So now it’s time to vote!

Which book should I read first?

The Slow Regard of Silent Things
Unbound
Shades of Milk and Honey
A Darker Shade of Magic
A Court of Thorns and Roses
The Thief

Check back to see which book I’ll be reading first. And wish me luck!

Voting Results

The votes are in! Here’s what I’ll be reading. I’ll start with the first book, and see how far I get — especially since I have a lot of work to do this week, which I was not expecting when I signed up. Best laid plans, and all that.

  1. A Darker Shade of Magic
  2. A Court of Thorns and Roses
  3. Shades of Milk and Honey
  4. Unbound
  5. The Slow Regard of Silent Things
  6. The Thief

Thank you for voting! I really want to get to that book. I’m hoping it will get enough votes that I “have” to read it during the readathon!

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

It seems to getting a fair bit of love; right now it’s coming in second behind A Darker Shade of Magic, so chances are it will get read that week. 🙂

  1. Sanovia @ Creatyvebooks

A Darker Shade of Magic for $500 Alex. That’s the only one I read. That and ACOTAR but ADSOM is a bit better in my opinion.

This sounds like a awesome idea. I wish I could join but I know I will not stick to the book chosen for me lol.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thanks for voting! Sticking to the chosen book(s) may be a challenge for me, too, because I’m something of a mood reader. But I tried to choose books that I’ve really wanted to read for a while. And I’m used to reading books I “have” to read because of all the review copies I get.

I was debating on picking between unbound and the thief so I just went with my gut instinct and chose Unbound.

I have only heard of ACOTAR as you know its on my poll for this readathon but decided against it as I’d like to see a book I don’t know being read and reviewed 🙂

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Good choice – I love that series and really want to read Unbound! So far, though, it’s number 4 in the poll, so I don’t know if I’ll get to it during the readathon; it depends on how much time I have and how fast the other books go.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Originally I thought I’d use it to work on ARCs, but I’m really craving fantasy and there are so many on my list that I both want to read, and already own. So it’s going to be a week of wallowing in other worlds.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

It’s well ahead of all the other contenders at this point, so I guess I’ll be reading it first! Thanks for voting!

  3. Rita @ View From My Books

I voted for A Court of Thorns and Roses because I read this and really enjoyed it, and I’m not a diehard fantasy fan. I intend to also read book 2 soon. I’m curious about A Darker Shade of Magic now, though. Good luck!

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thank you, Rita! It’s good to know you enjoyed it, particularly as someone who doesn’t read a lot of fantasy.

  4. Morgan

That was a really tough choice between ADSOM and ACOTAR. But ADSOM absolutely blew me away, and I’m reading the sequel now, so I picked that. There are some really great choices there! 😀

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thank you for voting, Morgan! I tried to pick books that I’d be happy to read, no matter which ones got the most votes.

  5. Shaunesay

I went with Shades of Milk and Honey because I’m interested in that one too. That author will be at MidAmericon that I’m going to, so I hope to get something read by her before I go!

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thanks for voting, Shaunesay! I really want to read that one, but it’s polling third at the moment, so it will depend on how fast I get through the other books.

  6. Kayla

Definitely voted for Darker Shade of Magic. I’ve heard nothing, but good things about it! Hope you have fun with readathon!

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply — it’s been a busy month! I’ve started ADSOM, and while I’m only about 14% in so far, it’s very good!

  7. Kelsey

It was so hard to vote, but I went with A Darker Shade of Magic! A court of Thorns and Roses was really good too though.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Thanks! Unbound didn’t win, but I will get to it eventually. 🙂 Looks like I’ll be reading ADSOM, followed by ACOTAR.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

I hope so! My daughter Robin liked it, and hey — it’s based on both Beauty and the Beast and Tam Lin, so those are major points in its favor already!
