My 2018 Year-Long Challenge Goals

My Goals for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2018

Of course, I’m participating in The Backlist Reader Challenge—after all, I’m hosting it! I’m setting my goal at 30 backlist books this year. Last year, I set my goal at 24 books, and ended up reading 36—but I didn’t review most of them. So my secondary goal is to review the majority of the backlist books I read this year.

If you want to participate in The Backlist Challenge 2018, click the image above to go to the rules-and-signup page—and get some of those older books off your TBR list or pile!

My goal is 200 books for the year. I beat that goal significantly last year, but I also had mono, and couldn’t do much other than read for several months. I’d rather stay healthy this year, and I also plan to spend more time exercising and being creative, so I think 200 will be a stretch rather than a cinch.

My Goals for the 2018 Blogger Shame Challenge

The Blogger Shame Challenge is for “all those review books that somehow slipped through the cracks and just didn’t get reviewed when they should have.”  Any review copy that is more than 4 months past due counts for the challenge. I had trouble making myself write reviews last year, so I have a significant blogger shame pile (virtual, of course.) Some of them I’ve read but didn’t review, and others I never even read. My goal is to read and review 10 ARCs from 2017 that I didn’t get around to. I’m going to count books I reread if it’s necessary in order to review the book. If I can review an older book without rereading it, I won’t count it for this challenge.

My Goals for the Newbery Medal Challenge

The Newbery Medal Challenge is an open-ended (no time limit) challenge to read all the Newbery Medal winners. In my lifetime, I’ve read 17 of them, all of them well before I started blogging. (Most I read as a child.) This year, I’d like to read and review 3 Newbery winners that I haven’t read, and re-read and review at least 2. Here are the titles I’m most drawn to, though I don’t have to stick to this list:

  1. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
  2. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  3. The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
  4. The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley (reread)
  5. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L.Konigsburg (reread)
  6. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle (reread; I want to reread it before the movie comes out)

The only two I don’t own in some format or other are The Graveyard Book and The Tale of Despereaux, and I’m sure the library has both of those.

I really should do the Blogger Shame and Backlist Reader Challenge – I want to read lots of older books and yeah… the review pile is definitely something to be embarrassed at. The question is… will I track them? Probably not.I suck at tracking challenges. Good luck with all your challenges!

Tracking challenges is always hard for me, too. I set up a spreadsheet to track my reading, reviews, and challenges. It’s been helpful. I should probably share it in a post. I use Excel, but I could probably figure out how to do it in a Google Docs spreadsheet. Anyway, you’re welcome to join The Backlist Reader Challenge anytime you want!

My big focus this year is my NetGalley backlist. It is never-ending. I got through 33 last year, so I’m hoping this year to whittle even more off my list. Good luck with your challenges!

Good luck with your reading goals, too! 200 with a youngster will be a challenge, but I suspect you can do just about anything you set your mind to.

Good to know you enjoyed The Graveyard Book. I just requested the audiobook from the library, along with The Tale of Devereaux.
