Catching Up—Sunday Post – 5/21/2017

May 21, 2017 Sunday Post 22

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures — I mean books!

Catching Up

Two weeks ago: Following her graduation, we put in three days of hard work to get Robin (and her roommates) packed up and the house clean. Wednesday, May 10, we loaded up our rented van and took Robin and her stuff to my parents’ house in New Mexico, and helped her move in there. She’ll be living with them for a bit: tutoring, writing, and looking into grad schools. We celebrated her graduation with a wonderful family party on Saturday. Mr. Bookwyrm and I flew home early Sunday morning (May 14.) It’s not the way I would have chosen to spend Mother’s Day — leaving both my mom and daughter at 5:00 in the morning — but Mr. Bookwyrm needed to get back to work. (Neither of us realized it was Mother’s Day when we bought the airline tickets.)

Last week: Once home, I started to slowly catch up on the housework and spring cleaning that didn’t get done while I was sick. (If you missed it, I’ve had mono since sometime in March. I’m finally recovering, and my energy level is definitely improving, though I am not quite back to normal yet.) I’m trying to catch up on blogging and writing reviews, since I had zero time for that the previous week. I got three reviews written this week, and one posted. And I’ll be trying to make more time for writing, knitting, spinning, and/or sewing; I feel like I’ve been neglecting my creative side for months.

Speaking of creative: one of Robin’s pieces recently won the fiction prize for Albion, a national undergraduate literary journal. That makes her third literary award this year!

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  Again, I had a lot going on the second week of May, so I didn’t get much reading done. I finished rereading Jayne Castle’s Harmony series. And I read the new Stephanie Laurens romance that showed up on my Kindle; I’d forgotten that I had preordered it, but it made a nice break when I needed some downtime. This past week, I reread David Eddings’ The Redemption of Althalus for the first time in close to a decade. I finally finished Escape to You (Jennifer Ryan; ARC) and started Hospitality and Homicide (Lynn Cahoon; ARC.)

Eventually I’ll get back to The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre (Gail Carson Levine; ARC) and all the other ARCs I’m supposed to be reading. (Especially now that the Clean Sweep Challenge is going on!)

Listening to: Hidden Figuresby Margo Lee Shetterly. I’m about a quarter of the way through.

Watching: Robin and Mr. Bookwyrm went to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 after we finished cleaning and packing up the girls’ rental, but I was too tired. And since we got home, Mr. Bookwyrm has been working late, so the Father Brown mysteries are on hold; we’ve only watched one or two. We’re still in season 1.

Many thanks to Berkley, Kensington, Harlequin, and St. Martin’s Press!

Purchased for Kindle – in the last three weeks!

Lots of books! I didn’t post any of my purchases in the 5/07 Sunday Post, so they’re included here.

I’ve bought these over the last three weeks, almost all of them on sale except A Court of Wings and Ruin (for Robin, though I’ll read it eventually), the second Trials of Apollo book, and An Irresistible Alliance, all of which were preordered. I also bought 16 Agatha Christie mysteries on sale! (There were 25 on sale this time, but I had bought 9 of them the last time they went on sale.) At this point, I’m ready to let go of all my Agatha Christie paperbacks and just go with Kindle. The print is too small in half those paperbacks, anyway.

Have a wonderful week, and happy reading!

Thank you, Laura! I’m looking forward to diving into some of those—there are some lovely summer reads, especially in my ARCs. 🙂

  1. Trish @ Between My Lines

Well done Robin, that’s very impressive. I too am feeling that I’m neglecting my creative side lately, and am trying to think of ways to bring it back into my life. OK, blogging helps a bit but doesn’t fully feed the urge for me. You’ve lots of lovely new books, enjoy!

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

You hit the nail on the head: blogging helps (and is fun) but it doesn’t fill the creative urge enough. I used to do a lot more knitting, but it feels like I don’t have time now.

  2. Sandy @ Somewhere Only We Know

Glad that you’re feeling better. Congrats to Robin on all fronts! I’ve been neglecting a lot lately. My creative side and reading. I think IF I finish this book I’m currently reading by the end of the month that will give me a whopping 2 books for the month. AH! It looks like you have quite a huge haul and several titles that interest me…specifically Sarah J Maas. Hope you have a great week!

It’s a relief to be feeling almost back to my “normal” self again. 🙂 Have a lovely week and thanks for stopping by—and I hope you get a little more time to read and be creative soon!

Sounds like a busy week! Your books look good , I read a lot of the same books and I just received A Stardance Summer as well. I love Donna Allward’s books too! Have a great week.

Alward’s series set in Darling, VT, was cute and fun, so since these reprints were on sale, I thought I’d give them a try. 🙂 And I can’t wait to read Emily March’s A Stardance Summer—I’ve been a fan of Eternity Springs almost since the beginning of the series.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

Yes, I’m enjoying it very much! But I find it’s a little hard to keep track of all the names when I listen to it. An auditory learner probably wouldn’t have that problem, but I’m very much a visual learner (except for music.)

      • Evelina

Yeah, I used to have the same problem before, absolutely couldn’t listen to books. But I think it’s a trained skill? It got easier with time 🙂

I’ve certainly gotten better at it over time, but I still find that for remembering lots of facts, I do better if I see it in print. I do enjoy audiobooks, though, especially when I’m doing something that doesn’t require much attention, like folding laundry or driving (as long as there’s not much traffic and I know the route.)

          • Evelina

Yeah, that’s definitely true. I also often catch myself zoning out when I listen. It’s much easier to pay attention when you’re staring at the thing you’re paying attention to 😀

I tend to tune out the audiobook when I need to think about something, especially numbers, like measuring amounts when I’m cooking, or counting stitches for a knitting pattern—unless I know the recipe or pattern really well, and can put it more-or-less on automatic.

  4. Rita @ Paging Through Books

Way to go, Robin! I remember you mentioning years ago that your daughter loved to write fantasy when in high school. For now, her literary awards are sure to feed her soul.

Glad you are feeling better. You had so much on your plate this Spring anyway and then getting hit by something like that– ouch!

Good book selections! I am in the middle of two Sarah J. Maas series but haven’t gotten to this one yet. Truthwitch and Bookshop on the Corner look good to me. I read House of Secrets last year. It was good, not great, for me but your opinion may vary. Have a quieter and enjoyable week ahead!

Robin is still writing fantasy, but she has a gift for writing poetry as well, and has come to love it. Getting published and winning awards is a confidence-booster for sure, and does indeed feed a writer’s soul.

Thank you for the good wishes, and the recommendation re House of Secrets. 🙂 Have a great week!

I would have liked to get some done, but I had so little energy, and I needed all of it to get my actual work done. As it was, my clients were gracious enough to extend my deadlines so I could get it done. My husband kept up with the vital day-to-day stuff (cooking, dishes, cat litter, and so on), thank goodness!
