Sunday Post

It’s been a very busy week for someone with low energy, although I’m definitely improving. I turned in one index midweek. The concert I’m directing is this afternoon, so I also spent the week preparing the program for printing, rearranging the dress rehearsal because of a conflict, and all the million and one other details that go into getting ready for a concert.  The dress rehearsal was productive, and I think they’re going to be good. By tonight it will be over, and I will be A) proud of “my kids” and the beautiful music they make, B) exhausted, and C) grateful for a break before the next concert season starts. (The answer is all of the above.) The gratitude will last a week or two, and then I’ll start missing the kids and the music!

I’ll be really busy with another index this week, so I’m pulling out my last two “canned” reviews and leaving it at that. Sorry, but I’ll get back to News & Notes and regular reviews—and comment replies!—in a few weeks, when things calm down a little and I have more energy (hopefully.)

Did I mention that Robin’s graduation is coming up in May?

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I’m still working on The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre (Gail Carson Levine; ARC.) Oh, who am I kidding—I didn’t touch it all week. I just don’t have the mojo for anything new right now.  I finished rereading the Arcane Society series by Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick/Jayne Castle—those books are like candy, especially when I don’t have much mental or emotional energy. (I didn’t post covers of them, though.) I also decided to reread Nora Roberts’ The Collector, which I reviewed back in 2014 (review here.) It holds up pretty well to a second reading, though the hero seemed a little more controlling and autocratic than he did the first time I read it.

Listening to: Hidden Figures, by Margo Lee Shetterly. I did get a bit of time in on this, here and there. It’s fascinating, but sometimes hard to keep track of the names when you put it down for days at a time. The narrator is good, but I may have to switch to print so I can flip back to check my memory (or use the index. One of the real downsides of audiobooks is the lack of an index. Of course, I would say that, wouldn’t I?!)

Watching: The Father Brown series is now on Netflix streaming, so we watched the first two episode. I really like it. “Mr. Weasley” (Mark Williams) as a compassionate, observant, and very perspicacious priest. The character is based on the stories by G. K. Chesterton; it’s a long, long time since I read them but I think the TV series isn’t particularly sticking to the original plots. That usually bothers me but in this case, I’m OK with it, because it’s the character that has stayed with me in the 30-ish years since I read the stories.

      Thanks, Laura! It went well. Sorry to be so late replying, but the last several weeks have been busy and exhausting!

    Hope your concert goes well! I binge the Father Brown Mysteries, I really enjoyed it and I kept thinking that guy looked familiar, didn’t place him as Mr. Weasley…lol.

      They’re a lot of fun, aren’t they? We’re just getting back to them; it’s been a very busy (not to mention exhausting) several weeks.

      I don’t have this audiobook on Whispersync, since I borrowed it from the library, but I’ll keep that advice in mind!

    This is such a busy time of year! My son’s choir concert is coming up and mine too, in the next few weeks. I’m sad that our directors are retiring this year, so we’ll have to seek another singing venue. 🙁 Enjoy your concert, I’m sure it will be great!

      Losing your directors is hard. Is there any possibility someone else could take over the choir? That’s how I started directing; I was tapped by the previous director, who mentored me until I felt more confident.

          I enjoy working with the kids, but I’m nowhere near ready to work with adults on major works, like the Brahms Requiem that we’re singing in June. So I hope our director keeps going for a long time — and that when she’s ready to retire, there’s someone who can step up to replace her.

      Thank you, Anna! The concert went well, and I did get my index turned in, and then made the changes requested by the author, but that took until Sunday May 7 to complete. I’m taking a little time off now to finish recuperating.

      Well, there’s this about being sick: you have more time to read and/or watch TV, because you don’t have the energy for anything else. 🙂
