New Year’s Eve (Sunday Post, 12/31/2017)

 My Week

What a joyful, busy week! Christmas Eve saw us attending church three times (the morning for the 4th Sunday of Advent, and then the children’s pageant in the evening, followed by an 11:00 Christmas vigil mass.) Christmas day was for the immediate family: my parents, Mr. Bookwyrm and me, and Robin; we opened stockings and gifts, ate lots of delicious meals, listened to glorious music, and delved into all our new books. Boxing Day was spent at my sister’s house, celebrating with the extended family and our dear friend Pam and her two teens. We played games, exchanged gifts, ate a wonderful turkey dinner, and laughed a lot.

In the week since, we’ve played more games (mainly Carcassonne), read, caught a lot of Pokemon, written fiction (Robin is finishing up a 4th draft; I’m working on my first fanfic story), spun yarn (just me), talked, and simply enjoyed one another’s company. It’s been lovely! Part of me hates the thought of going  back to our workaday lives in a few days, but I know our Tasha-kitty misses us, and both Mr. Bookwyrm and I need to get back to work before, as he says, we forget what we do for a living. And I’ve got my choruses to get underway!

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I’m still reading Bloodstains with Bronte by Katherine Bolger Hyde (ARC), and I reread Promise Not To Tell (Jayne Ann Krentz; ARC), which I read in September; I want to refresh my memory before writing the review. But between family time, writing, and spinning, I haven’t had much time to read.

Listening to: Still listening to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Watching: We watched the first of the Agatha Christie Hour mysteries (a Christmas gift from Mr. Bookwyrm), “The Case of the Middle-Aged Housewife.” It’s a rather dated story about an unhappy woman whose husband is neglecting her and doting on his beautiful young (and gold-digging) office worker. Years ago, I saw a few of the other mysteries in this collection, and they are better than this one was, so I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the collection.

Christmas Gifts!

I’m so excited! I got four of the “Books I Hope Santa Brings Me”: the illustrated Prisoner of Azkaban and the 10th-anniversary Name of the Wind, plus a preorder of Tempests and Slaughter and the Audible edition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Thank you, Mr. Bookwyrm and Santa!  My mother gave me Kate Morton’s The Forgotten Garden, which I’ve been wanting to read for a while. She and my stepdad also gave me three Campion mysteries in trade paperback, because I’ve had to get rid of most of my mass-market paperback copies. (The print was too small.) And my sister totally surprised me with Renegades, which is great, because I’m something like #27 on the hold list at the library.

Um… well…my finger slipped. No, seriously, Amazon had some good post-Christmas sales. Most of these are books I haven’t read, but would like to; some are also in series that I am collecting to read. The only one I’ve read before is The Zero Stone, which I enjoyed as a 6th grader but haven’t read since.

    Happy New Year Lark! Sounds like you had a wonderful holiday and hopefully got to catch up a little bit on rest since you’ve been running crazy lately. You got some fantastic books! The Forgotten Garden was my first Kate Morton and I loved it. That’s too bad about the Agatha Christie hour though I’m sure the others will be better. Most of her things are charmingly dated but some are just dated! Have a great week!

      Thank you, Katherine. It has been a crazy-busy fall. I’m hoping things will be a bit better when I go home, but of course I’ve got a lot to do to get ready for the concert season, as well as several indexing projects already scheduled.

      I agree re Christie, and I’m pretty sure some of the others will be better. This one was just meh. I’m also really looking forward to reading The Forgotten Garden.
