 My Week

I had a lovely time at my college reunion last weekend! (Other than the weather, that is. It was hot and muggy, and the dorms aren’t air-conditioned.) I spent time with several good friends from my college days, and connected with some people I knew mainly through the alumni group on Facebook. Many thanks to Mr. Bookwyrm for being extremely supportive and putting up with a lot of conversations in which he knew neither the participants nor the people and experiences we were talking about. (Not to mention carrying things for me, because of my shoulder.)

Tonight I’ll be singing Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with the community chorus I’ve sung in for the past 20 years or more. It’s the second time we’ve sung this one, and it’s a fun piece: just challenging enough, but not overwhelming. There are moments of breathtaking beauty, some complex fugues, and a whole lot of power and bombast. For a small, semi-rural/exurban community to be able to present music of this quality and on this scale is nothing short of amazing! The director brought in four terrific soloists, and the instrumentalists are all top-notch. The professional instrumentalists for this concert include 2 violins, viola, cello, bass, 2 oboes, trumpet, and tympani, plus a really good organist. They and the soloists have come from as far as 2 hours away to perform with us (though some are closer, of course.) The chorus itself is only about 30 people this year, and rarely more than about 40. Singing with them is a wonderful experience.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finally finished Murder on the Flying Scotsman by Carola Dunn (ARC)—a cozy historical mystery, number 4 in the Daisy Dalrymple series (recently reissued with a new cover.) I read it over a decade ago, but had completely forgotten it, so I’m counting it as new-to-me. I also continued rereading the Celta Heartmates series by Robin D. Owens, finishing books #9–14: Heart Search, Heart Secret, Heart Fortune, and Heart Fire. After that, I started reading Heart Legacy, #15 in the series, but just like the last time I started it, it’s not really pulling me in. So instead, I switched to rereading The Wounded Sky, a Star Trek (original series) novel by Diane Duane. And I still need to get back to Someone to Care by Mary Balogh (ARC), and The Underwater Ballroom (anthology ARC), which I set aside during the stressful weeks when I was struggling to finish 3 indexes.

Listening to: I finished Lady Knight, which brought my relistening to Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small series to a close. Now I’m debating whether to go back and finish Wildwood Dancing in audio, or just read it and listen to something else instead. On our 8-hour drive to and from my alma mater, Mr. Bookwrym and I listened to quite a few podcasts: Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!; RadioLab; 20,000 Hertz; The Allusionist; and 99% Invisible, for the most part.

Watching: Mr. Bookwyrm gave me Thor: Ragnarok for Mother’s Day, and we had fun watching it this week. Next up is Black Panther.

First Time at Firelight Falls was a preorder. The two Ngaio Marsh books were bought with a gift card, a thank you from the mother of one of my chorus kids. The rest were all on sale. I’ve read the Ngaio Marsh books and The Murder of Mary Russell before, but they are both in series I love and want to have available on Kindle as well as on my shelves.

    Your college reunion sounds so much fun!! I haven’t been back to my college more than once after I graduated. It would be fun to go back, the campus looks a lot different, I think.

      It really was fun! I’ve been back several times, beginning with my 10th reunion. I missed a few milestone reunions, but I’m going to try to make it to all of them from here on out—for the class I entered with as well as the class I graduated with. (I took 5 years, as did more than a few of my friends, for various reasons. Some were double-degree students enrolled in both the conservatory and the college.) My campus has changed somewhat; there are new buildings here and there, but they haven’t taken down any of the old ones, so the feeling is still much the same.

    Your college reunion sounds like a lot of fun minus the un-air conditioned dorms! I read the first few books in the Daisy Dalrymple series but at the time the books were hard to find and I never continued. I’d like to get back to them as I love the time period. Have a great week!

      I read at least half of the series back when they were coming out regularly, but lost track about 4 or 5 books ago. And I can’t remember all of them. So I’ve got some catching up to do!

      She has really grown on me, too. 🙂 That was two weeks’ worth of books, because I didn’t post the previous week. So it’s not quite as many (per week) as it looks.

      Yes, dorms aren’t great, at least once you’re out of your 20s. The beds and linen-service sheets leave a lot to be desired. (No mattress pad, no fitted sheet, so the bottom sheet constantly came untucked and slithered around.) But it was totally worth it. 🙂 And the concert this past weekend was great.
