 My Week

The weather finally turned! Gone are the mid-80s temperatures we’ve been seeing for weeks. Since the remnants of the hurricane blew through on Thursday, temperatures have dropped into the 50s and 60s, and shouldn’t go above the low 70s for the rest of the month. Time to dig out my sweaters and handknits!

Our kitty has been having a rough time. Her eating was dropping off, and she’s been grinding her teeth. Tuesday night we noticed her eye was bulging and the area around it looked swollen. Since that was one of the symptoms our Thomas-cat had in his last days, we thought we would have to say goodbye to our lovely Tasha. But the vet said he didn’t think it was a tumor in her head; she had an abscessed tooth. He pulled the tooth; she spent 2 days in the “hospital” and she’s now home on antibiotics. (Have you ever tried to give liquid antibiotics to a cat? We call it “mid-Atlantic cat wrestling.”) Anyway, we’re waiting to see if the swelling goes down with the antibiotics. She seems to be feeling somewhat better, and she’s eating better, so hopefully she’s getting over the infection and that’s all it was.

I’ll be working like mad all week, so I don’t know if I’ll get much posted this week or next.

Blog Ahead Challenge update

I’ve written 1 more post for the Blog Ahead challenge. That’s a total of 2 so far… still a lot fewer than I had hoped.

 

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  I read Echoes of Evil (Heather Graham), which I borrowed from the library two weeks ago.  I also finished rereading The Unlikely Ones by Mary Brown, a fantasy novel I loved when I read it almost 30 years ago, and enjoyed nearly as much this time around.  And I’m working my way through two ARCs: The Bartered Brides by Mercedes Lackey and Not Quite Over You by Susan Mallery… but I kept getting sidetracked by my audiobook.

In ongoing books, I really need to get back to The Underwater Ballroom (anthology; ARC), and I haven’t looked at Year of Wonder: Classical Music for Every Day at all for the last few weeks.

Listening to: I finished The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal. It was really good — an easy 5 stars for both writing and audio narration. Now I am listening to the sequel, The Fated Sky, which takes place several years later.

Watching: We saw one episode of Cadfael, “The Devil’s Novice.” Mr. Bookwyrm worked late all week, and I was busy with music stuff on Saturday, so that was all we had time to watch.

Thanks to a trip to the used bookstore and the library’s booksale, I found some childhood favorites, a fairytale collection, and a Nora Roberts series I haven’t read. Plus a book on children’s literature (really an encyclopedia of sorts), which for some unaccountable reason was on a shelf marked “Less Interesting Reference.” Well, I think it’s interesting! (Please excuse the color distortion in the photos. I had terrible lighting conditions, and the photos came out extremely yellow/orange. I tried to correct digitally, but it wasn’t very successful.)

I already have a signed paperback of The Fated Sky, but I bought the Kindle edition so I could get the Audible version for less. (Tip: If you’re not an Audible subscriber, the Kindle+Audible deal is usually cheaper than the Audible version on its own.) Here Be Dragonnes contains the book I’m reading in hardcover (The Unlikely Ones), plus two later novels set in the same world. Since I haven’t read those yet, I thought I would pick up the collection. The other two books, Enchantress from the Stars and What I Did For a Duke, were on sale.

      It made me laugh, but yes, I thought it was a little rude, too. I was excited about the OZ books; I loved the series as a child.

    You sound very busy, Lark. I’m glad you got to a used bookstore and the library sale. You found some good books. The “Less Interesting Reference” is very funny. Rude if you were the author of any of them!

      Thank you, Jan! I went to the used bookstore to take in some books I’m pruning, and ended up walking out with 4 books to add to my collection. Then I took the books they didn’t want over to the library to donate, and stumbled on the booksale. The Friends of the Library used to do a “ginormous” biannual booksale, but they’ve decided to discontinue it in favor of smaller and more frequent (4 times a year) sales. I will really miss the big sales, when they filled whole rooms with tables of books, plus boxes of books under the tables. Now they do it in the atrium area, on book carts, and there are far fewer books to choose from. I used to come home from the big sales with 30 or 40 books sometimes, but with these smaller sales, I usually only find a few.

      Thank you, Jan. It’s been rough; she’s been dealing with some sort of oral cancer for almost three years, and holding her own with the help of steroids (that seem to help shrink the tumors.) But I think she may be starting to decline now… though of course we hope not.

    We kitty wrestle Calliope often. She is not a fan of medicine and can become very hostile. Auggie is bigger and easier to hold, she is so little it’s hard to get a grip on her. I am glad Tasha is feeling better.

    I am seriously happy dancing to the weather, It better stay like this or I am going to be so angry! Lol

      We end up wrapping Tasha in a towel like a kitty burrito to give her the antibiotics. She hates it. And she hates the medicine, too, poor baby.

      I’m so glad the heat is over. I even need long sleeves indoors today.

      Thank you, Kimberly. By the time I had a chance to reply, we had lost her. She died Friday (10/19), leaving a hole in our hearts. But life goes on and there is much to be thankful for, including the lovely weather and the caring thoughts of friends like you.

    Our weather dropped but not quite so much. We’re in the 60s. It feels good to wear long sleeve shirts.

    I’m also working on the Blog Ahead Challenge. I hope to do better this week with 4 days off. I listened to The Calculating Stars and want to get to The Fated Sky but haven’t yet.

      The cool weather does feel good! I won’t get a chance to work on Blog Ahead this week; I’m behind on my real job, so I need to focus on that. Oh, well, maybe I can try for my own “blog ahead” in November or December.
