Sunday Post – 12/27/15

December 27, 2015 Sunday Post 8

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures – I mean books!

My Week

I hope you had a wonderful week and that your Christmas, if you celebrate it, was delightful!

We had a terrific week with Mr. Bookwyrm here, and a lovely double Christmas. Christmas Day was just the immediate family: my mom and stepdad, Mr. Bookwyrm, Robin, and me. On Boxing Day (yesterday) we all spent the day at my sister’s house, along with dear family friends who are as close as family. We had a second Christmas dinner and another round of presents, plus plenty of conversation, laughter, and games.

Winter Storm Goliath blew in yesterday afternoon with snow and howling winds. We weren’t sure whether flights would be making it out today or not, but it looks like the answer is yes. . . which means we’ll be taking Mr. Bookwyrm down to Albuquerque to catch a flight home today. I’ll stay here with Robin until it’s time for her to go back to college, then fly home. Originally my husband planned to take the next two weeks off and stay here, but “best laid plans” and all that: pressures at work and a looming deadline on a project meant he has to cut his vacation short. I hope to make it up to him later this spring!

What I’m Reading/Watching

We saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Monday — it was wonderful! Much better than the prequels, in my opinion, and possibly as good as the original trilogy of my teen years (IV, V, and VI.) Other than that, I’m not going to say anything, in deference to those of you who haven’t seen it yet.

I haven’t had a lot of time for reading, because I’ve been enjoying spending time with Mr. Bookwyrm and the rest of my family. I put Beverly Jenkins’s Forbidden on hold while I reread the Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas — something familiar and therefore easy to put aside when other things were going on.

Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas! Too bad Mr. Bookwyrm had to go home early but I understand. I can’t remember the last time my husband was able to come on vacation without having work be an issue. I love the Hathaway series! I’m hoping to carve a little space in my reading next year for rereading some of my favorites. There are so many that I haven’t read in far too long. Have a great week!

We did have a good Christmas! I hope you did too… though I worry a little about that chest cold you say keeps hanging on.

I’ve so enjoyed rereading the Hathaways. I’ve learned over the last few years that while I can push to read more new books, I really need to save time in every month (or better, every week) to re-read old favorites. It’s my way of dealing with stress and/or regaining my equilibrium. When I’m really stressed, it’s very hard to focus on something new, but an old favorite fits like a warm, cozy sweater.

Winter Goliath blew into Texas, too. It did quite some damage and devastation up north. It stinks that Mr. Bookwyrm had to fly back early. I hope the spring plans get “sprung” at the last minute so he can’t work through them! 🙂

My man is in Massachusetts with his family, and Friday night he started barraging me with all of these texts about the weather and if there were flood warnings and such. He was super worried. I told him where we are that we’d get thunderstorms, rain, and maybe a little ice. To date, we’ve just had thunderstorms and rain, but yesterday he kept checking in every hour about the weather. Isn’t his little (OK, he’s not little) non-Texan self cute?

I hope you guys ring in the new year right!

I agree that it stinks that my honey had to go home to work, but on the other hand it’s better to get the project done and in on time than miss the deadline. Heaven knows I’ve had to work late nights and even vacations before! I freelance, so my work is portable. It’s hard to turn down a paying project even over a vacation, when part of me always deludes myself that I can get it done if I just work on it a few hours each day. It never turns out that way in practice, though. But his job is the primary income, and I totally understand that the project has to get done. I just wish it wasn’t due in early January…

I’m glad the storms didn’t affect you too badly. Your man is so sweet to keep checking up on you. I don’t think people who haven’t been there realize, on a gut level, just how BIG Texas is! Plus the media often say “in Texas,” which isn’t very useful if you’re worrying about someone in Galveston and the storms are in Amarillo (or wherever.)

I suspect we’ll have a quiet New Year celebration, but we’re celebrating several January birthdays on the 1st, so we’ll party then — with tea and scones. 🙂

Your double Christmas sounds very nice, although I was sorry to hear your husband’s vacation has been cut short. When we are able to travel to my mom’s house for Christmas, we often end up having multiple celebrations. It’s not always so easy to make it up there though.

I am so glad you enjoyed the new Star Wars movie! We did too. I am anxious for my one coworker to come back to work tomorrow so she and I can talk about it.

I love how you have some of your favorites listed on your sidebar with the book spines.

Have a great rest of the week!

Oh, I’m glad you like that favorites list! The woman who did the graphics for them stopped doing it, so I haven’t been able to add any in quite a while. I was actually thinking of taking it down, but maybe I’ll leave it up for now.
