 My Week

We got a new dryer early this week, so we’ve been catching up on laundry. And Friday night, we drove down to Richmond for dinner and a bluegrass concert—Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen. If you like bluegrass, you should check them out; they’re really good. Solivan is an amazing mandolin player, and the other three band members (banjo, guitar, and bass) are terrific musicians, too. Their latest album, Cold Spell, was nominated for a Grammy, but they still like to play small venues, which is how we got to see them.

I started a new occasional feature on the blog, called WIP Wednesday (for “work-in-progress.)  The meme is the brainchild of Nicole at Book-Wyrm-Knits, who also reviews books at book-wyrm-reads. It’s where I’ll share my knitting and (eventually) spinning projects. I’d like to post at once or twice a month, more often if I’ve got a finished project to show off or have started something new.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I reread the first three Ravenels books by Lisa Kleypas, starting last week with Cold-Hearted Rake (review) and continuing this week with Marrying Winterborne (review) and Devil in Spring (review). Then I plunged joyfully into the sequel, Hello Stranger (ARC), which I loved. I’ll be reviewing it for the blog tour on its release day, Feb. 27. This week, I plan to get back to my three interrupted reads: Cat of the Baskervilles (ARC), The Problim Children (ARC), and A Scandal in Batersea (library.)

Listening to: I finished up Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yesterday. Next up: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Watching: Yes, well… we managed to squeeze in one episode of Star Trek: Discovery, which means we’re only two episodes into the spring run, and three episodes behind. As of tonight, that will be four episodes… We also tried to watch the Olympics, but NBC won’t let us stream it without verifying our cable subscription, and since we don’t have one, that didn’t work out too well.

    I love getting new appliances. When our washer broke I never realized how much i took it for granted.

    Looks like you had a good time I haven’t seen a live performance in a long time.

    I am seriously missing all of the olympics, I just can’t stand NBC coverage and I just keep hearing about it before it’s on TV.

      We’ll be missing the Olympics, too. I do love the figure skating, and wish I could watch it. Oh, well, some of the performances will probably show up on YouTube eventually.

      Oh, I love her books, too! I’ve read everything since the Wallflowers series, and some of her earlier books as well. Hello Stranger was really good!

    I learned how to spin for a 4-H project many, many, many years ago, and I loved it. It was very calming. I even got to “perform” at a local living history museum with the antique spinning wheel my mother bought me. A few months ago my sister was talking about rearranging my mother’s attic and I asked her if she would bring my spinning wheel down and she informed me that my mother had sold it several years ago. Seeing that it was a birthday gift, I think she owes me the money! Ha ha. ?

    Yay for the Harry Potter audiobooks! I have the first three and I want to listen to one soon. ?

      She sold your spinning wheel?! Oh, no! I enjoy spinning and I’m saving up for a wheel of my own, but it will take at least a year.

      Our Harry Potter audiobooks go back to when Robin was young. Once we got iPods, we ripped the CDs so we could listen to them without having to deal with the CDs, and we’ve been using the MP3s ever since… but the CDs are still in the basement.

      If you like historical romance, you will probably love Kleypas!

      We replaced the washer about 4 years ago, when it broke down past repair. The new dryer isn’t a “match” for it, but they both work, so I’m happy!

    Congrats on the new appliance! I’ve gone through machine break-downs a couple of times in the past few years– and like the internet– we wonder how the females(because let’s face it, it was women) who came generations before us ever got anything done without all of it, lol!

    I’ve read only a few contemporary Kleypas– Rainbow Road series– and one historical fiction, and now you reminded me that she is an author I would like to return to. Glad you really enjoyed Hello Stranger. Love her dress! What is the era that this story takes place in? Enjoy your books!

      I don’t think we realize how much of women’s time was spent doing housework. Of course, I could stand to do a bit more of it myself… I’m not the world’s tidiest person! LOL

      It’s funny how everyone either loves or hates the Hello Stranger cover. 🙂 I’ve been interested in the history of clothing since high school, and took costume construction and design courses in college under a woman who was a stickler for historic accuracy, so personally, I’m not a fan of the dress. It’s pretty, and very striking against the pink background, but it’s totally wrong for the period. I think they got a lot of pushback when they released the cover, because on my paperback ARC they have added a belt detail and a neckline ruffle and little puff sleeves, to make the bodice look more “period.” The dress on the original design is strapless. I do like the model, though; I think she’s a good choice for Garrett.

        Have you been on the Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney World (or Disneyland before that, or the 1964-65 World’s Fair before that)? It looks back in time, and talks about how they have a new “washday marvel” and “now it only takes 5 hours to do the wash” where it used to take 2 days. Just crazy.

          No, I haven’t seen that. I’ve only spent half a day at Disney World, and that was back in the 1970s; my dad, then-stepmom and I were driving west along the southern route, and detoured to Disney World, but we had a tight schedule and couldn’t stay long. As an adult, I’ve tended to spend my vacations either visiting family or traveling to places I’ve always wanted to go, and although I’d like to go to DW someday, it has never reached the top of the list. Robin didn’t particularly want to go, as they hate crowds, so we never went when they were young.

    Sounds like you’ve had a productive week! I enjoy the Harry Potter audio books too, but I originally got most of mine from the library. Oh well, I’ve been buying them from Audible as I feel like listening to them, so now I own them.

      I borrow most of my audiobooks from the library, too. But Robin ended up with the whole HP series as gifts (over many years), so…

      Oh, I think you would love the Kleypas novels! I hope you get a chance to read them. But there are so many good books vying for our attention!

      Losing your dryer before Christmas must have been frustrating! And it’s SO the wrong time of year to have to purchase anything big. I hope you got it sorted out!

      Well, it’s loads off my (basement) floor—load of laundry, anyway! LOL The Jill Shalvis novelette was cute; now I want to read the previous book.
