My Week

The most exciting news of the week is that four of Robin’s pieces are being published this spring! She won the poetry and short story undergraduate competitions for the national literary magazine published by her college, and another poem and an essay were both picked up by The Albion Review, a literary magazine that publishes undergraduate work. We are so proud and happy for her. She has worked hard to develop and refine her talent, and it’s wonderful to see her work recognized.

I’ve spent the week working on my indexing website, music for the spring concert, and my blog. I finally managed to get a few reviews written and posted, and a few more written and scheduled. The indexing continues to hum along: I start a new project next week, and I’ve got another scheduled for April. The weather’s been nice, so I’ve gotten out for a few walks (and caught a few Pokemon along the way.) It’s been so warm, in fact, that the crocuses are out, the forsythia are starting to bloom, there are new leaves on the weeping willows, and I saw a redbud tree in full bloom on Saturday. In <em>February!</i> This is about three full weeks earlier than normal, folks.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished rereading Nora Roberts’ Guardians trilogy with Island of Glass, and plunged into my Kindle preorder of Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas. It was wonderful! So of course, I had to reread The Devil in Spring, about the hero’s parents… and that lead to rereading Mine Till Midnight. Maybe this time I’ll actually get a review written! I’ve made some progress with Ghost Talkers (Mary Robinette Kowal) which I got for Christmas; I’m liking it very much so far. When I finish that, I’ll go back to finish The Crooked Sixpence (Jennifer Bell, ARC.)

Listening to: Podcasts, mostly. I went back to the beginning of 99% Invisible to listen to the episodes I’d never heard. I discovered an interesting podcast about language (specifically English, so far), called The Allusionist, so I started that series as well. I’ve also started listening to Writing Excuses (season 10, because nothing older is available through the podcast app, and I haven’t yet figure out how to download the early seasons from the Writing Excuses website to my iPhone.)

Watching: We watched episodes 6-13 of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett as well as episode 1 of The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes — quite a binge for us!

I preordered Devil in Spring and devoured it as soon as it came in. The two Cadfael mysteries are ones I have read, but I’m replacing my too-small-print paperbacks with readable Kindle copies. And the Brandon Sanderson is mostly for Robin, though I may read it eventually.

    I don’t think I ever read the Guardian series. They were a little too paranormal for me when they first came out and I just never went back. Now I don’t think they’d bother me at all but I had forgotten all about them. New Nora Roberts to read! Now I’m excited! I reread Devil in Winter back in December and loved it just as much as I did the first time. I’m really excited about Devil in Spring though it is weird that it’s their kid because I’m not sure how I feel about peeks into the sex lives of multiple generations. I’m sure I’ll get over that though. Congratulations to Robin! How exciting for you all! Have a great week!

      They’re certainly more paranormal/fantasy than some of her other series, where there’s just a touch of magic or ghosts or whatever. As a fantasy lover, that’s right up my alley! I hope you enjoy them, now that you’re reading more of the paranormal stuff. And I know you’ll love Devil in Spring.

      I didn’t think I’d really get into Pokemon, but it’s fun. There aren’t any Pokestops in my neighborhood, though, and not a lot of Pokemon — both seem to be more prevalent in urban areas where there are more landmarks and everything is closer together. I actually have to drive to get to any Pokestops — or at least, to get to them safely. There’s one about a mile away, but it requires crossing a dual-lane highway with a traffic light but no sidewalks or pedestrian crossings, and it’s just too dangerous.

    SUPER CONGRATS to Robin! I wish I had known about more avenues and resources for publishing when I was an undergraduate. This is amazing! She should be so proud of herself.

    I was on a roll at the beginning of last week with writing reviews (I had six, wrote 2.5) and I fell victim to the stress monster and rolled to a stop. Now that Mini Blog Ahead has started, I am going to be cranking them out to meet my goal.
