My Week
The news has been so horrible the last few weeks… violence, terror, and hatred everywhere you look. I’m trying to figure out how to be a light in that darkness. There seems so little I can do that reaches past my own family and friends to the wider world… but we can’t stop trying.
Three indexes down in the last month, and one to go. There’s light at the end of the tunnel! In future, I will try not to take on quite so many books in what amounts to 5 weeks.
I’ll be cashiering the library’s summer booksale on Wednesday. It’s smaller than the two big sales they have in October and April, just fiction books (including some mystery, romance, and SF/F.) But no doubt I’ll come home with a tome or two!

What I’m Reading/Watching
I reread several romances this week, but also read Aunt Dimity and the Buried Treasure (Nancy Atherton; library) and Stars of Fortune (Nora Roberts; bought and reread to refresh my memory before reading Bay of Sighs.) I have three books going at once now: A Darker Shade of Magic (V. E. Schwab) for the Make Me Read It readathon, Daughters of the Bride (Susan Mallery; ARC) because it comes out this week, and Fridays With the Wizards (Jessica Day George) just for fun and because the library wants it back!
In audio, I managed to squeeze in a little of Bill Bryson’s Made in America, but Great World Religions: Islam is still on hold — not because it’s not interesting (it is) but because I haven’t had the mental energy. And I want to get back to watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, Season 2.
The votes are in on the Make Me Read it Readathon! So here’s what I’ll be reading this week, in the order in which they were voted. I’ll start with the first book, and see how far I get.

We never had a library sale by use. Our library stinks which is why I avoid it. Need to find a new library to visit otherwise I spend a lot of time at B&N.
This week sucked to much chaos. I have been avoiding the news because it depresses me. Just wish we could all figure out how to live peacefully. I wish we would stop using labels and just agree that some people are jerks and some people are not. I also think social media makes everything much worse.

I’m sorry your library is no good! I’ve been lucky to have pretty good libraries nearby for most of my life, though I will admit that our county library doesn’t hold a candle to the 8-branch, city-and-three-counties regional system headquartered in our nearest city. So I pay a yearly fee to use that system, and figure it’s more than worth the cost.
It’s been a horrible week. My heart just weeps for the families of all the slain. There’s still enough of my Quaker upbringing in me to believe that violence is rarely the answer to any problem. It seems to me that throughout world history, our greatest leaders, religious and secular, have been those who sought and valued peace and love. I wish we would get the message already, and find peaceful ways to eradicate the racism, hatred, fear, and anger that have led to these terrible events.

And yeah…this week was pretty awful…not that every week lately doesn’t have some frightening horrific news in it. What a world 🙁

I have the Christie Curse coming up from my TBR shelf. I love the concept so much! I’m looking forward to Bay of Sighs as I really enjoyed Stars of Fortune. That’s great about the indexes! Focusing on the positives in a world of dark violence can be a real challenge. Sometimes, the petty grievances of everyday life seem minor in comparison.

I liked the first book better on the second reading, but still not as much as I love the Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy. Still, this one has a lot of appeal.
I know that if I don’t take time to focus on the positives, I can get sucked into a really bad place of anxiety and probably depression, which doesn’t help anything or anybody. I want to be informed, and I want to do something constructive about the terrible things that are happening, but I need to make sure I counterbalance with the good things.
Got My Book
I was also feeling weighed down this week because of the violence. I look forward to hearing what you think about Darker Shade. I have the audiobook, but haven’t listened to it yet.

Look at all those lovelies! You also got a lot read despite your busy work week. I’m sure you’ll be ready for a break when your current project is done.
The news last week was depressing and horrifying. It’s easy to let it suck us down into a bad place. We need to try to rise above, find a way to be part of the solution, and find some good. I know, easy to say but hard to do. It’s a goal though, something to aim for.

I am very upset with what is happening in the US. The day following the Dallas officer shooting, the man came home and told me they are on mandatory OT. There have been two threats made against his department. He is on high alert all the time now, and it frightens me. I hope you enjoy your sales job! 🙂 Neither my hometown library or my city’s library do book sales.

It really has been bad and just doesn’t seem to let up! Part of me doesn’t want to read the news anymore… Even though I like to be informed. It’s just getting so that every day I get horrid news when I wake up. Anyway – let’s focus on the positive! Like you almost being done indexing. Yay!! Enjoy some relaxation after that k? Hugs!!!
