Sunday Post – 7/17/16

July 17, 2016 Sunday Post 17

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures – I mean books!

My Week

I was so swamped trying to finish the index this week, Mr. Bookwyrm took the afternoon off to cashier for the library’s summer booksale in my stead so I could keep working. Ergo, no book haul (at least from the sale.) But I got the project done! I turned my project in on Friday, and now I’m free for at least two weeks!

That’s good, because we need to get ready for our summer travels. We’ll be heading to Mammoth Cave National Park later this month. So this coming week, I’ll be doing laundry, making lists, packing food-clothes-bedding-etc., shopping for non-perishables… you know the drill. I just hope I can find the hiking pants I mislaid somewhere! Not that I plan to do any real hiking… given the heat and humidity and my general out-of-shape-ness, I plan to stick to gentle strolling. At least it will be cool inside the caves.

Last Week on the Blog

Don’t miss the current giveaways:  When a Scot Ties the Knot;  Two Cozy Mysteries (see sidebar)

Upcoming on the Blog

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I read Daughters of the Bride (Susan Mallery; ARC),  Fridays With the Wizards (Jessica Day George; library), and Bay of Sighs (Nora Roberts; purchased.) I started A Darker Shade of Magic (V. E. Schwab) for the Make Me Read It readathon, but I was so stressed with work that I haven’t finished it yet. Instead, I reread some favorite historical romances. I’ll work on finishing ADSOM over the next week or two.

Listening: I made a little progress on Bill Bryson’s Made in America while washing dishes and doing laundry, but Great World Religions: Islam is still on hold.

Watching: I watched two Poirot mysteries this week (“The Hollow” and “The Mystery of the Blue Train”), but other than that, I’ve been too busy for TV.  I do want to get back to Avatar: The Last Airbender, though—I want to finish season 2 before Robin goes back to college!

The Make Me Read it Readathon ended yesterday! And…I utterly tanked. I thought, when I signed up, that I would be done with work by the beginning of the week. Instead, it was Friday evening, and I had a lot of running around to do on Saturday, so I haven’t finished even the first book yet. But don’t worry! I do plan to read all of these, hopefully by Christmas.

  1. A Darker Shade of Magic (V. E. Schwab) – started
  2. A Court of Thorns and Roses (Sarah Maas)
  3. Shades of Milk and Honey (Mary Robinette Kowal)
  4. Unbound (Jim C. Hines)
  5. The Slow Regard of Silent Things (Patrick Rothfuss)
  6. The Thief (Megan Whalen Turner)

For Review or Review Consideration

Many thanks to Minotaur, Berkley, and Harlequin MIRA! Aren’t the covers beautiful? Especially the first two.

Purchased for Kindle

All of these were on sale when I bought them. I’ve read Artists in Crime but Marsh is one of my favorite mystery authors, so of course I wanted a copy for my Kindle. And I read and reviewed Haunted Destiny as an ARC.

From the Library

Happy reading!

You have been busy, Lark. It’s good you’re getting a break from indexing and can work on vacation planning and shopping. We went to Mammoth Caves when our kids were young and loved it. There was a Shaker village near there which was a real hit with the kids, too.

The Tasha Alexander and Mary Balogh books are books I’d like to get, too. I hope you have a much more relaxed week!

Congrats on getting your work done! *throws confetti* Your vacation sounds wonderful and a gentle stroll sounds perfect. I picked up book two of Marty Wingate’s Potting Shed series, I hope we enjoy the series. 🙂 Have a good week!

Yay! All done! The caves sound like a great vacation, I hope you take lots of pictures! 🙂

I have been on a Historical Romance kick, need to find a few on KU to read. I forgot how much I really enjoyed them.

Have a great week, Lark! Happy Reading!

Sounds like things have been crazy there! That’s great that Mr. Bookwyrm took over the library cashier though too bad you had to miss it. Fantastic that you got it done and now don’t have to worry about it any more. I love Blue Train and The Hollow! Apparently Christie had her issues with both of them because caved to publisher pressure on them. She changed the ending of Blue Train and added Poirot to The Hollow. I haven’t seen the BBC version of The Hollow in awhile but J and I saw it in play form a few years ago and it was excellent. I’ve got it coming up soon in my Christie re-read. Have a great week!

I didn’t realize Poirot wasn’t in the original draft of The Hollow — interesting! Neither book is among my favorites, and I’m not quite as sold on these late-season Poirot movies as I am on the first seasons, but they’re still pretty good.

  5. Rita @ View From My Books

Nice post! Glad you’re finished with indexing for a bit, anyway. Kudos to Mr. Bookwyrm for stepping up to the plate. I also received the newest Heather Graham and will get it in a few weeks, hopefully. The Balogh cover is just gorgeous.

I googled location of Mammoth– so you’re going to Kentucky, awesome! I guess I missed some discussion while on my so-called hiatus. Don’t stress the packing and organization!

Mr. Bookwyrm is my prince! 🙂 And Balogh’s new publisher has been putting out some amazingly beautiful covers, both on her new books and on her re-releases.

    • Lark_Bookwyrm

He’s such a wonderful man! And I promise I’ll be careful with the heat.

Yes, I did enjoy Friday with the Wizards, though I still think the first two books are the best. And Avatar is great&emdash;I’m so glad Robin introduced me to it!

  6. Stormi Johnson

That was sweet of your hubby to take off so he could man the cash register while you finished your project. Hope you enjoy your vaca and get a little reading in. 🙂 You got some great books, I hope you like the Marty Wingate book, I really like that series. 🙂

Sounds like a fun vacation. I’m with you about the hiking. Too hot this time of year. LOL I do love being outdoors though:) Lovely haul of reads this week. Enjoy! And I hope you find your hiking pants!

I enjoy the outdoors too — but not when it’s hot and humid! I guess Virginia isn’t the best place for me to live… 😉

  8. Charlie @ Girl of 1000 Wonders

Bummer you didn’t get any new books from the sale, but it sounds like perfect timing that your project is complete. How nice your husband could step in for you! Good luck with the camping prep, I always feel like a hot mess these days trying to plan for anything requiring more than two days worth of clothes.

Planning and packing for trips always takes me waaay longer than I think it should. And I tend to overthink as well as overpack.

  9. Melissa (My World...in words and pages)

I know I’m late this week. But I’m trying to get around to visiting everyone again. 🙂 Hope you have a great week! Enjoy those books!
