Sunday Post
I spent half the week preparing for my usual end-of-summer trip to see both sets of my parents, which we often combine with celebrating Robin’s birthday. I left Thursday for New Mexico, where I’ll be for the next week or so. Mr. Bookwyrm couldn’t come with me because he has to work. I really miss him, and I know Robin does, too.
Robin and I had a lovely time Friday morning wandering around Santa Fe a little, before and after picking up Robin’s good friend and college roommate Owl from the train station. Robin, Owl, and I are all knitters and spinners as well as fantasy geeks (and Pokemon Go players), and both of them are accomplished writers and I’m an aspiring writer (sort of), so we’ve had lots of fun just hanging out and talking about all those things. Saturday we celebrated Robin’s birthday after the fact with my sister’s family, my parents, and Owl.

I’ll be here in northern New Mexico for the eclipse on Monday, and yes, I’ve bought eclipse glasses. We’ll only see about 75-85% of the sun eclipsed, depending on which charts you look at, but back at home, Mr. Bookwyrm should get a slightly better look at around 85-90%. In a way, I wish we had made plans to travel into the path of totality, but it just didn’t work out.
COYER: I’ve missed some of the daily COYER Photo Challenge this week, but I’ve been trying to post them even if I’m late. You can see my photos over on Instagram (I’ve also reblogged some on Tumblr.) It’s going to be more challenging from here on in, because I don’t have my physical books with me.

What I’m Reading/Watching
Reading: It’s really appalling how little reading I’ve gotten done this week. I finished The Day of the Duchess (Sarah MacLean; ARC) and Susan Mallery’s Finding Perfect (bought for Kindle.) I started East by Edith Pattou, but I haven’t gotten very far yet.
Listening to: Imaginary Worlds podcasts from back in 2015. I also listened to a few episodes of The Allusionist, a podcast about words.
Watching: We watched a few more Father Brown episodes before I left; we’re halfway through season 3. And I’m finishing up Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Santa Fe is a great little city, especially if you’re into art. I’m not staying there, though; my folks live in Los Alamos, about 50 minutes away. Another great little town!

Yes, it’s a flat wall, just painted to look as though it’s broken and torn. That kind of artistry amazes me.
I’ll enjoy this vacation and spending time with my parents and extended family, all of whom I love dearly. But I’ll also be glad to go home again in a few weeks. I miss my husband…

Isn’t that a lovely cover? I can’t wait to read it! Alas, it was a library book so I had to give it back before I left on my trip, but I plan to read it this fall sometime.

Sounds like you are enjoying your time in New Mexico with family and friends.
I assume that East is a retelling of “East of the Sun” which I read and enjoyed. That’s a refreshing tale to read in the hot N.M. sun, lol.
Enjoy your vacation there and hope you get to see the eclipse. My family bought the glasses to view it– I have no interest in it because of a vision-loss phobia (I blame Burgess Meredith for dropping his eyeglasses in the Twilight Zone episode, if you are of an age to remember that one!).

Indeed it is, with elements of The Snow Queen thrown in for good measure. As for the eclipse, I made sure to get NASA-approved glasses, but we may not have much chance of seeing it anyway. The forecast is for cloudy with thunderstorms. I remember seeing the end of that Twilight Zone episode, and I’ve read the screenplay (or the short story it’s based on, I can’t remember which.) I agree; loss of sight is one of my nightmares.

Enjoy your time in NM! I’m sure no matter where you are, viewing the eclipse will be cool. We are in the 90% totality area here and since I am a high school teacher, everyone is VERY excited!

I thought A Spoonful of Magic looked like fun. I’m looking forward to reading it! And yes, we did get to see the eclipse. The clouds parted enough for us to see about 15 minutes of it. Not the total eclipse; we were too far from the path of totality for that. But we saw about 76% of the sun’s disk covered up. It was pretty cool.

Oh, that is SO sweet and cool that Robin and her friend have things in common with you and you get those moments together. We got 70% of the eclipse. I went out and saw it at lunch and then on my conference period at the peak where I was. Super cool! Glad I did it. Enjoy your trip!

Robin and Owl are both really amazing and interesting young women. I feel blessed to be Robin’s mum, and lucky to know and be friends with both of them.
I’m glad you got to see the eclipse. It was really cool, even if we could only see part of it! The clouds did clear enough that we got a good view for a bit, including the peak coverage for where we were.
