Sunday Post
I left New Mexico last Saturday for Salt Lake City, Utah, to spend this week with my dad and stepmom. It was a quiet week for the most part. I had a wonderful lunch with my aunt and one of my cousins, and made dinner (quiche!) for my stepmother’s son, his wife, and their adult son on another night. It was good to see them; our schedules don’t always work out when I come to visit, but I always enjoy getting together when we can.
Of course, the whole week was overshadowed by the news about Hurricane Harvey. My heart goes out to all the people in Texas and Louisiana whose lives and/or homes were affected by the storm and the floods it caused. My sister- and brother-in-law (Mr. Bookwyrm’s sister) live quite close to one of the Houston reservoirs that filled up and started releasing water. They did not evacuate, so you can imagine how concerned we were about them! Fortunately their house is upstream from the reservoir and has stayed dry. And we had daily texts or Facebook messages from them during the storm, which kept us from worrying too much.
I got home last night, and will spend this week getting caught up around the house (well, hopefully!) and on the blog (also hopefully.)

What I’m Reading/Watching
Reading: I finished Golden Age and Other Stories by Naomi Novik (ARC), and started Death Distilled by Melissa Mullett (ARC.) I’m still reading The Waking Land by Callie Bates (ARC), and I’ve put East by Edith Pattou on standby until I finish it. And because I’m fickle, I also read Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn. I could swear I had read it years ago, but I think I must have started it and not finished it, because by a third of the way in, I was in completely new territory. So I’ll be able to count it toward The Backlist Reader Challenge.
Listening to: nothing this week, because I was visiting family.
Watching: I’ve been watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, but didn’t get a chance to see any episodes this week. Same thing with the Father Brown mysteries. I’m sure I’ll get back to both in the coming week.

I’ve already read Dirty Dancing at Devil’s Leap and Once a Rebel, thanks to ARCs from the publisher, but I had preordered them for my Kindle since I’m following both series and want to support the authors. I also read and reviewed Death Mask as an ARC back in 2016 (though in fact I had read it years ago as a paperback), but I wanted my own copy for rereading.The rest are mostly books I haven’t read, which were on sale.

I am glad your family is safe in Texas. Such devastating news coming out of there and Louisiana. It sounds like you had a nice visit with your family this past month! That was how my July was. It was good to see family I hadn’t seen in 15 or so years. Golden Age and Other Stories looks really good. I hope to read that one eventually.
I couldn’t resist requesting A Murder For the Books either. It sounds like fun!

I hope we both enjoy A Murder for the Books. It sounds like fun, and I love the premise. Actually, about five years ago I was toying with trying to write a series with more-or-less the same premise (a librarian in a Blue Ridge town), so I’m looking forward to seeing what she does with it!

I love her Veronica Speedwell series. I’ve only read one Lady Julia book so far (there are 7 or 8, I think, but there won’t be any more), but if they’re all as good as the first, I’m going to really like this series, too.

Golden Age looks fabulous, and The Waking Land has me curious too. I saw a review of that somewhere and it got me thinking maybe… A Murder for the Books looks fun too.

Golden Age is a lot of fun, but only if you’ve read the Temeraire books. The Waking Land is good so far!

Yes. It’s going to take a long time to clean up and rebuild, and some people will probably never be able to recover or rebuild what they have lost. But most people survived Harvey, and that’s something to be grateful for. I worry about Irma in Florida; the storm has already done so much damage and cost so many lives in the Caribbean.

Well, it’s never the whole family all at once—it’s a big family and we’re scattered all over the place. My dad and stepmother have been married 25 years, but I’ve actually never met one of my stepbrothers, who has worked all over the world and now lives in Thailand. But I’ve met the other stepsiblings on that side at least a few times each, even the ones who don’t live near my dad and stepmother. We were all adults with our own families when our parents got married, so we’ve never lived together as siblings or spent holidays together or anything. I’m closest to J and his wife, though, so I always try to see them when I’m in town. 🙂
Yes, we are very relieved that Mr. Bookwyrm’s sister and brother-in-law are OK, and even their home escaped without much damage (and no flooding.) But I know many of their friends and coworkers weren’t as lucky. Houston is going to be a long time picking up the pieces from this one…

It’s good to hear your family was safe from the hurricane. It’s was heartbreaking to see the damage and I hope everyone can rebuild soon. It sounds like a nice trip to Utah. I think I own Silent in the Grave and I think I’ve read it, but I have trouble remembering where I left off with that series. I keep thinking I’ll get back to the series, but there are just so many books.

I have every intention of continuing with the Lady Julia Grey series, but you’re right; there are so many books, and as a blogger with a lot of review copies to read, it’s much harder for me to binge my way through an entire series. But at least I’ve made a start!
