Sunday Post

So much for my plans to get caught up on blogging this week. I seem to be having a really hard time getting anything done, on the blog or off it. I’ve been distractedly flitting from thing to thing, and not finishing anything. I hope I can break that cycle in the coming week. I’m really behind on pretty much everything at this point, except work (because I don’t have a project at the moment.)

The Tackle Your TBR Readathon begins tomorrow. I probably should use it to work on the huge virtual “pile” of digital ARCs I seem to have accumulated in the last few months. But I need to discipline myself to write the reviews right away, so I don’t get behind like I have with the ARCs I’ve read in the past few months.

So many natural disasters in the last few weeks…the wildfires in the western US; the hurricanes in Houston, Louisiana, the Caribbean, Florida; the flooding in South Asia; the earthquake in Mexico. There is so little I or any of us can do about any of it, except pray and donate toward relief efforts. If you were or are about to be personally impacted by any of these, I hope and pray you and your loved ones are and will stay safe.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  I read a lot this week! I finished Death Distilled by Melissa Mullett (very good) and flew through Draw Your Own Fonts by Tony Seddon (both ARCs.) And although it’s not due out until January, I couldn’t resist reading Jayne Ann Krentz’s Promise Not To Tell (ARC), which I received this week. (It’s linked to last year’s When All the Girls Have Gone, and it’s also very good.) I also read Nora Roberts’ High Noon for the first time (counts toward The Backlist Reader Challenge.) And I reread All Night Long, Light in Shadow, and Truth or Dare by Jayne Ann Krentz. I’m still reading The Waking Land by Callie Bates (ARC), and I’ve put East by Edith Pattou on standby until I finish that one. (Click cover links for Goodreads pages.)

Listening to: Film scores on Pandora, when I’ve listened to anything. Which hasn’t been often.

Watching:  We watched a couple of Father Brown episodes. We also started rewatching Sherlock; we never got around to Season 4, and I’ve forgotten too many of the clues, so I wanted to go back to the beginning. Next week I also plan to continue with Avatar: The Last Airbender as well.

At least I kept the purchases under control this week! The Practice Effect, which I own in hardcover, is a humorous SF adventure that plays with entropy and the laws of thermodynamics: what if, instead of staying the same or deteriorating,  physical objects improved with practice?

    I think I need to devote more time to reading this week and less time to blogging. I’ve been so intent on prepping posts for the future–and that’s going mostly well. I am still not ahead as I would like to be. My online time and reading time are competing more these days unfortunately.

    Are you enjoying The Waking Land? I have that one on my TBR pile to read.

      That’s great that you’ve been able to get at least somewhat ahead with your blogging. I really need to focus on writing reviews this week. I’m so overdue on some of them. Online and reading time coming into conflict is a big problem for me, too. And lately I feel burnt out when it comes to writing reviews.

      So far, I am liking The Waking Land very much. Though I wish it wasn’t present tense.

    I’m trying to remember High Noon – was that the hostage negotiator with the agoraphobic mother? I’m pretty sure I liked it though it didn’t land in reread territory for me. The new Krentz looks so good! I loved the last one so I’m super excited about Promise Not to Tell. And of course Death and the Viking’s Daughter looks excellent. I’m really excited about the premise on this one. Have a great week and good luck with the focusing. If you figure out how will you please let me know?

      Yes, you’re right—that’s High Noon! The new Krentz is good; I devoured it in one night. (I might have stayed up until 4:00 am to finish it…) And I’m really looking forward to Death and the Viking’s Daughter, too. We had a hint about it in the last book, and I’ve been anticipating it ever since.

      If I figure out how to focus, I’ll let you know. I’m thinking of trying an app called Habitica. It “gamifies” habit creation/breaking, daily tasks, and to-do list items, using a pixilated RPG game format. It looks interesting and possibly fun.

      I hope the storm misses you, but you’re smart to keep an eye on it. We’re not expecting much in Virginia beyond maybe some rain, but I’m still watching. And I bought batteries, just in case. 😉

    I totally know how you feel! I am all over the place and can’t seem to focus on just one thing. I seem to have a list of things to do and by the end of the day I have done half or nothing at all. I just don’t know where all the time goes. I am trying to get myself more organized but I’m not not sure that will even help anymore. I need more people in this house to be willing to do more of my jobs.

    I hope this week will be better for you and you can focus more (wishful thinking? lol)

      I know I’m frittering a lot of time on social media sites and browsing the web. I’ve got to stay more focused when I’m online – do what I came to do, and get off again. Social media is great fun but it’s a huge time sink!

    I struggle with finding time to blog. I have reviews to write up but it’s helped that I write notes while I read, so I don’t forget things I want to mention in my reviews. I wish I could blog ahead but I work with what time I have lol. I hope you have a good week!

      When I’m swamped with indexing projects, it can be hard to find time to write reviews. But at this point, it’s mostly that I got behind when I was sick last spring, and now I feel overwhelmed. But I’ll get there. Taking notes while reading is a really good idea. I was doing that in my notebook, which is now my bullet journal as well as my all-purpose notebook. Recently I started taking notes in it again, so that should help.

      I seem to go on Krentz binges. Also Nora Roberts binges. They’re relatively quick, absorbing, and satisfying… except for the occasional Roberts novel that takes me into territory I find too creepy or uncomfortable. But I just skip those. 🙂

    I find that staying motivated helps me tackle outstanding reviews. So keep at it and hope you can whittle some of those down.

    Lark, that is exactly how I have been feeling lately, too. I’ll get started on something and realize I also need to do X and flit over to that, and everything just snowballs. I have so many things I am neglecting right now that will catch up with me.
