13 New Releases I Can’t Wait to Read (July-Dec. 2016)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is My Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases For The Second Half Of The Year.

Here are the 13 forthcoming books from July through December that I’m most eager to read and in many cases, plan to buy for the hoard. They’re in publication order.  (ETA: I’ve added 2 more that I didn’t know about when I made the post. So there are now 15 books. I’ll be busy!)

 

 

  • Family Tree (Susan Wiggs) – 8/09/16. Wiggs returns to general fiction with the story of a woman returning home to rebuild her life after losing everything. I loved The Apple Orchard (review) and The Beekeeper’s Ball (review).
  • Ghost Talkers  (Mary Robinette Kowal) – 8/16/16. WWII-era historical fantasy/spy novel about a military unit called the Spirit Corps, whose members are mediums. It’s a great premise, and I’ve been wanting to read this author — she’s the only one on this list who isn’t already a favorite.
  • Elite (Hunter #2) (Mercedes Lackey) – 9/06/16. Post-apocolyptic dystopian fantasy with the Fae and hellhounds. Sequel to last summer’s Hunter (review)
  • A Terrible Beauty (Lady Emily #11) (Tasha Alexander) – 10/11/16. Lady Emily returns to Greece, only to be told that her first husband—dead for the last ten years—has returned. While I wasn’t enthralled by The Adventuress (review), I continue to enjoy this series.
  • The Inheritance (Charles Lenox #10) (Charles Finch) – 11/01/16. This is one of my favorite historical mystery series; it’s very well-written, with a sensitivity to character and to the mid-late Victorian era in which it is set. (my review of book #9, Home by Nightfall)
  • Someone to Love (Westcotts #1) (Mary Balogh) – 11/01/16. First in a new series by one of my all-time favorite historical romance authors.
  • When All the Girls Have Gone (Jayne Ann Krentz) – 11/29/16. No one does romantic suspense with snappy humor and electric attraction quite like Krentz. In this one, the heroine hires a PI to help her find her stepsister, who has gone off the grid—and may be in deep trouble.
  • Island of Glass (Guardians #3) (Nora Roberts) – 12/06/16. This series is hard to categorize, but I’m going with paranormal-romantic-suspense, though there are decided mythic/fantasy elements too. I liked but didn’t love the first book, Stars of Fortune, but I’m hoping to get more attached to them as the trilogy moves on. Book 2, Bay of Sighs, comes out today, and I hope to read it soon.

 

ETA: Oops, I didn’t know about these when I made the post, but I definitely want to read them!

 

  • The Burning Page (The Invisible Library #3) (Genevieve Cogman) – 12/06/16. Third in the series. I love that we’re getting the first three books (a trilogy? but there might be more?) in under a year here in the US.

      She’s fun! Her early books as Amanda Quick tend to be more romance and less suspense, but in the last 15 or more years, it’s been pretty much romantic suspense or paranormal romantic suspense. She seems to have dropped the paranormal (ESP) stuff recently, except in her Jayne Castle futuristic ones, and has gone back to straight romantic suspense in both the historical and contemporary books. Either way is fine with me!

    You’ll love Mary Robinette Kowal! Her Glamorists series is awesome. I’ve pre-ordered Ghost Talkers.

      Oh, that’s good to know! I have the first Glamourist book on my Kindle; I’m just trying to find time to fit it in. I keep checking with the library to see if they’ve got Ghost Talkers in the catalog, but not so far. I put in a request for them to buy it.

    I’m adding the new Emily March to my list. I loved Reunion Pass! The Mary Balogh is exciting too and I like that it’s a new series because I feel so far behind with her books but this series I can at least come in at the beginning. I’m excited about the 3rd Roberts book. I loved Riley! And I’m super excited about the Jayne Ann Krentz! I love a missing persons case and her books are always so much fun.

    I am definitely interested in Ghost Talkers as well. I like Mary Robinette Kowal and the premise sounds really interesting! I’m not sure how I feel about the Harry Potter script – I probably won’t be able to resist but I think I’d prefer nothing or another novel to the various media things we’re getting. But I’m probably just being grumpy!

      I feel a little the same way re the Harry Potter play and movies. Then again, a writer might tired of writing the same thing; Rowling at least has the opportunity to branch out and try new things (plays, screenplays.) So I’m trying to stay open to loving these, too.

      Speaking of HP, I agree with you totally about Umbridge (on your TTT); she is, to my mind, in some ways more frightening than Voldemort. He has stopped being human, and he’s almost a stereotypical villain-with-a-mania. Umbridge is able to justify and indulge her evil deeds by pretending&emdash;or persuading herself&emdash;that it’s all in a good cause. She’s the sort of person who makes it possible for a Ministry or a country to descend from freedom and tolerance into fascism and intolerance. (A timely warning for the world today!)

    Not surprisingly, we share Harry Potter and Lady Emily this week! I really need to get on “The Invisible Library” train! And I keep saying I’m going to check out Charles Todd too. (Have you read the Bess Crawford series at all? I’m not sure which to try!) I’m intrigued by “Ghost Takers”! I’ve been meaning to read something by Mary Robinette Kowal ever since I participated in LetterMo; maybe this is the one, since I’ve been on a fantasy kick lately.

      I haven’t read any Charles Todd yet. I really should try them. But I really enjoy both Charles Finch and Tasha Alexander when I’m in the mood for historical mystery. And while there’s not as much fantasy on that list as I’d like, I can feel a fantasy binge coming on.

    I’m just about to buy the first Invisible Library book! I’M SO EXCITED. I love love books about books. xD It’s just like bookish inception right?!? And ohhhh, I’m definitely keen for the next Magnus Chase book! The first one made me laugh my brain out. Which is always my favourite reaction to a Riordan story. :’)

      TBH, I have no idea if The Invisible Library is like Inception, because I haven’t seen it. But it was certainly interesting! As for Riordan, everything I’ve read has made me laugh out loud, usually more than once. He is brilliant at being funny and exciting at the same time.
