Top Ten Books On My Fall 2017 TBR List

September 19, 2017 Top Ten Tuesday 24

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature/meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR List.

Books Due Out in Fall 2017

In order of publication date:

Books Published Before September 2017

In no particular order, and subject to change at a moment’s notice. There are 11 because I’m partway through both The Waking Land and East, so I figure they count as one. [winks]

Your reading list is even longer than mine! I’m so excited for “Artemis”! I know it won’t be anything like “The Martian,” but I’m looking forward to Weir’s take on something a little more traditionally sci-fi.

I hope you like “Silent in the Sanctuary” — perfect fall reading. It wasn’t quiiiite as good as book 1, but I still enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to book 3. I wish there were more books in the series — I feel like I should spread them out!

Well, as I said to Ro, I probably won’t make it through all of these, and I’m sure I’ll read some that aren’t on this list! But Artemis, yes, I’m definitely looking forward to that one! (And I’ve got an e-ARC, so I don’t have to wait for the publication date!)

You have a pretty diverse list here, and looks like you’ll be super busy for the rest of the year, huh? Hope you enjoy your reads! Hugs…RO

LOL I’m pretty sure I won’t actually get all of these read, even though I’m a fast reader. For one thing, there are review books I accepted that I’m interested in, but didn’t quite make the cut for this list; obviously I’ll be reading them anyway. But some of these are also review books, and I can always try to squeeze the others in, right?!

I liked the first three or four Iron Druid novels by Kevin Hearne (I haven’t finished the series yet), so A Plague of Giants caught my eye based on the author alone; once I read the blurb I had to request an ARC. I’m almost embarrassed not to have read Stars Above yet; I love the Lunar Chronicles so what has taken me so long?!

So many awesome sounding books–many of which I want to read too. I am excited about Terminal Alliance. It sounds like a lot of fun. The Waking Land is also one I really want to read. I hope you get to as many of these as you are able, Lark! Enjoy! Thanks for sharing!

I’m excited for Snow and Rose! That’s always been one of my favorite fairy tales. And I also can’t wait to read Artemis by Andy Weir because The Martian was so good. Great list!

Snow and Rose sounds wonderful, but I don’t know when (or even if) I’ll be able to get my hands on a copy. I’ve got my fingers crossed that my library will order it. Artemis sounds great, almost like a cross between Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and a heist novel.

I really enjoyed Conspiracy in Belgravia! The first was good but there was some setup and that slowed the pace a bit. I’d really like to get caught up on Mary Balogh this year. I love how she tackles serious topics but keeps them vaguely period appropriate. I look forward to seeing what you end up reading!

It did start out a little slowly. I wish I’d written my review right away, because I’ve already forgotten the finer points and I remember thinking there were some things that didn’t quite hold together. I may have to do a quick skim before tackling A Conspiracy in Belgravia.

As for Mary Balogh, I love her books, that’s all there is to it. She knows the period and for the most part stays true to it, but her characters feel real and immediate, and it’s not hard for a modern reader to relate to them.

A Study in Scarlet Women is definitely a different take on the Holmes material. It will be interesting to see where the next book goes.

She varies between amazing and merely ok. She’s imaginative and usually a terrific storyteller. Her prose is straightforward but nothing out of the ordinary, yet she can make you see, hear, and experience the characters and their worlds. She can be a bit too overt or heavyhanded with her “message” at times. And a few of her books are the worse for poor editing—The Snow Queen has at least one glaring continuity error that someone should have caught, for instance—but it’s hard to know how much of that was an inexperienced editor… though I’m surprised the author didn’t catch it herself. I love some of her books and trilogies, like and enjoy others, and there are some I’m just “meh” on. She’s done a lot of collaborations; some work well for me, some not so much, and one or two I haven’t read at all. I think my favorite series are the Valdemar/Velgarth books, some of the Elemental Masters series, and the Bardic Voices books. One of these days, I should write a post on where to start with her!

Wait – it’s the last? I thought there would be five, just like the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series. Oh, bother — I like the character and was looking forward to more of them. (Just looked it up, and you’re right: it was announced as a trilogy.)

They’re more on the science-fiction side than fantasy, with the possible exception of a Lunar mind-control technique. But lots of fun regardless of genre!

I liked the first Lady Julia Grey mystery, but haven’t read the second yet. Lady Julia isn’t the rebel that Veronica Speedwell is, so the books are a little more conventional as well. As for A Burial at Sea, don’t start there; it’s book 5 in a series, and while you don’t have to read them in order, it helps. Start with A Beautiful Blue Death instead. 🙂
