Sunday Post – 7/13/14

July 13, 2014 Sunday Post, week in review 23

The Sunday Post is a meme hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.  It’s a chance to share news, a post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

I’m beginning to catch up a little on the blogging front, but I’m falling behind for work, so I’ll have to slant things the other way next week.

I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to rein in my NetGalley habit a bit. I requested only two books this week, both titles that I will read whether or not they are approved. (And I just got approval for one of them – yay!) Until Saturday, I’d bought only 2 Kindle books, one of which is for my daughter — but on Saturday, 3 Mercedes Lackey books went on sale, and though I’ve read them, I don’t own copies, so . . . (but hey, they’re not going on my TBR list because I’ve already read them. So they don’t really count, do they?)

Even better, I managed to prune about a box and a half of books from my shelves, all nonfiction. I’m slowly trying to tame the clutter monster, and, well, it turns out you can have too many books. For your available shelves, at least. So I freed up some shelf space for blog books (giveaways and review titles) in my study. Now they’re not in a tottering pile on my desk anymore.

This afternoon, Robin and I are cashiering at the library’s mini-sale. And I will try to resist buying any more books!

Thanks to RH-Ballantine for The Night Garden!

Undeniably Yours is part of a series I’ve been following. The Raven Ring is by an author my daughter and I both enjoy, and was on sale. Since she’s now on our Kindle account, we can share it, but it’s mostly for her.  The three Lackey books were on sale and I don’t own these three; they’re paranormal/urban fantasy.

That’s it for this week! Happy reading!

Congrats on the self control. I’ve been trying to be selective in the books I acquire too lately, but this week I got a little excited. WHOOPS! Have a great week and enjoy your new books!

I’m really trying to conquer the ARC mountain. New books are so shiny and hard to resist! But reading has come to feel like a chore instead of a joy; I want to reclaim the joy, and that means lowering the pressure and making some time for reading based on my mood.

    2. Jan @ Notes from a Readerholic

I picked up The Raven Ring, too. I considered the Mercedes Lackey books, but I have so many books to read… I’ll look forward to your reviews of The Escape (still need to read) and The Book of Life.

Good luck with your work this week and have fun with the library sale–and not buying the books!

      • Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

I noticed you had gotten The Raven Ring, and grinned to myself! That’s the one I got for Robin, but of course I’ll probably read it too, eventually.

Yeah, not buying books at the sale. Good luck to me with that. 😉 *chuckles*

I’m signed up for Amazon to tell me about the Daily Deals – I think that’s where I found out. But they only had two of them listed, plus a novella, and I discovered the third book through the “Other people bought” thingy.

The Night Garden looks good; at first I thought it was the author with last name Addison Allen, but I still put it on my wishlist.

I know what you mean about too many books being a problem. After I discussed how I was only going to read off of my TBR pile and not buy any books this summer…well, I went to the library and brought home 6 fiction books, 2 non-fiction reference books and my son took out 2 books. On the way out I stopped at the Friends of the Library shop and bought 3 books, 1 fiction, 2 reference types. They shouldn’t count as I didn’t buy them!

Suddenly I am looking for a place to hold all these plus the print books I got this week in giveaways. I need a new bookcase, but where would I put it? Such dilemmas, but good ones 🙂
      Enjoy your week.

I have a shelf on one of my bookcases for library books, and it’s usually mostly full. So I know all about the temptations of library books! *grins*

The Night Garden is by the woman who wrote last summer’s The Wishing Thread, which was one of my 5-star books from last year. So I really wanted to read it; that’s why I went ahead and requested it.

    4. Katherine P

I’ve loved the Heather Webber books I’ve read! I’ve got one coming up from my TBR shelf (maybe #3 in the series). I may have to go request The Night Garden. I’ve been going back and forth on requesting it but it looks so good! Can’t wait to hear what you think of The Escape. I’ve been on a string of mediocre books lately and Balogh always a great read!

      • Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

Balogh is an auto-buy for me, and I re-read them, so even when I get an ARC, I end up buying the ebook when it comes out. I liked The Escape very much.

Have you read Webber’s Nina Quinn books? (I think that’s the detective’s name.) I haven’t tried them yet, but I love the Lucy Valentine series.

      • Katherine P

I’ve read the first of the Nina Quinn books and it was okay. Typical cozy. I like the Valentine books a lot more.

Can’t wait to read the Balogh!

Cannot wait to see what you think of the Escape and Book of Life. Now stay off of Netgalley, although you seem to be doing good!

      • Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

Yes, ma’am! 🙂 And I loved both of them, of course.

I’ve got one more NetGalley book request that hasn’t been answered. But I’ve vowed: no more NG or Edelweiss books for several months, unless it’s an auto-read for me regardless of whether I get approved. (In other words, if I’m going to read it anyway, it’s OK to request it. Otherwise, not.)

    6. Bea

I almost bought those Lackey books, they were tempting. You’re doing better than I am at resisting temptation. 🙂 And speaking of temptation, the library is dangerous, be careful! 😀

I hope work goes smoothly this week, and enjoy your books.

      • Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

Don’t I know it! Just picked up two holds: the latest Aunt Dimity mystery by Nancy Atherton, and the latest Elemental Magic book by Mercedes Lackey. But… but… they’re auto-reads for me.

    7. samantha.1020

It sounds like you had a really great week in books. I am looking forward to reading your thought on The Escape as I’ve read one of Balogh’s books before. I need to read this one myself as I have it loaded on my ipad. I hadn’t heard of The Night Garden but I really like the cover so I’m going to have to check it out. Have a great week!

      • Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

The Escape was good; I’m a long-time Balogh fan. The Night Garden is by the author of The Wishing Thread, one of my 5-star books from last year. So I couldn’t turn it down!

    8. Berls

I think cashiering a library sale would be the start of the end for me – no way I’d leave there empty handed, so good luck 😉 And congrats on not requesting a lot at netgalley, that’s always a victory! Have a great week 🙂

He’s darling, isn’t he? He’s my bookwyrm. He’s currently sitting up near my Pern books; I thought that was appropriate. I have another stuffed dragon (named Puff) who sits near my computer and encourages me when I’m blogging.
