COYER Winter 2019 sign-up

I debated long and hard over whether to do the Winter COYER (Clean Out Your E-Reader) challenge this year. I’m behind on some of my challenges already, and I’ve been such a mood reader this year that it’s been hard to stick to challenges. But then I looked at how many books I have that qualify ($1.99 or less), and how many of them would count for at least one of my other challenges, and decided to go for it.

COYER is hosted by Michelle and Berls from Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life and Stephanie from Once Upon a Chapter.

Goals aren’t mandatory for this winter’s COYER challenge, but I’m setting a very modest goal of reading 10 qualifying books between Dec 1 and March 7. I’m not going to restrict myself entirely to COYER books during that time, but I’ll try to focus on them.

There are two versions of this winter’s COYER: the traditional and the buddy-read version. I’ll be doing the basic/traditional version. You can find out all about both versions at the COYER sign up page on Because Reading. I copied the basic rules below, but there are some optional twists and read-a-thons and so on to add to the fun, so do check out official sign-up page.

Book Recommendation

One of the rules this year is to include a book recommendation on your sign-up post — something you think everyone should read. I highly recommend The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. I reviewed the series as part of this post, if you’re interested.

The Rules

[As seen on Because Reading] As always, Winter COYER is the strict version of COYER. You can keep it simple with these basic rules, or go full in with the twist, which we’ll explain fully below on the sign-up post at Because Reading.

1. Read Your E-Reads! Every book you read MUST be in an electronic format – meaning E-Book or Audiobook. It’s okay to start a book before December 1st, you must be less than half way for it to count then review it during COYER.
2. The books must be FREE or NEARLY FREE! This includes review books, tour books, NetGalley, Edelweiss, etc. What’s nearly free? No more than $2 for eBooks and no more than $5 for Audiobooks (or the equivalent in your currency). Library books, borrowed books, or Kindle Unlimited books do not qualify for this COYER.
3. Announce your participation! This can be a blog post (or if you don’t have a blog – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Booklikes, Goodreads, Shelfari, etc.) If you want to list books you would like to read, that’s great, but not necessary. The point is to let everyone know you’re committed to COYER, maybe share some goals, and help spread the word. Not sure how to do your post? Check out this example from a previous COYER.
4. Make a book recommendation on your sign-up post! This is new, but super easy. When
   you write your sign up post (#3 above), recommend 1 book that you think everyone should read. It doesn’t matter if it’s recent or decades old. Genre, length, format… none of it matters.
5. Link up! Link that post (not just your blog homepage) to the linky below on the sign-up post at Because Reading.
6. Review & Link Reviews! Your review may be on your blog, Goodreads, Shelfari, Booklikes, etc. Link the review to the Review Linky (which will be available on the kick off post on December 1st).
7. Visit Each Other, Chat & Have Fun!

Rule #7 is the main reason I’m doing COYER again: it’s more socially interactive than most challenges, with its own Facebook group (where there are sometimes games!) and occasional Twitter chats. The people who participate are usually a lot of fun to be “around” (in the virtual sense.)
