Worth Reading

  • How ‘Sherlock of the library’ cracked the case of Shakespeare’s identity. (Robert McCrum, The Guardian) Afficionadoes of the various “Shakespeare wasn’t written by Shakespeare” theories may not agree, but Heather Wolfe’s research does indicate that Shakespeare himself is the author of the plays, and that “Shakespeare the player” and the William Shakespeare from Stratford-on-Avon, who married Anne Hathaway and left her his second-best bed, are the same person — a fact which I didn’t realize was ever in doubt. The most interesting point for me is that there is still information and evidence to be found, despite all the scholarship and research that has been done in the 400 years since his death.

And on mass-market paperback authors, too. I just don’t get it. Well, I understand them wanting to publish fewer lists overall; it takes time and money to gather that information, and money, at least, is in shorter supply at many newspapers than it used to be. But to ditch the mass-market fiction list? What on earth are they thinking?!

I agree that it doesn’t make sense. Particularly the mass-market listing. I know the graphic novel categories were experiemental, but to drop the mass-market fiction bestseller list? *shakes head*

Big news week! The headlines are a little bit of a roller coaster – NY Times cutting abck – boo! : Hugo award for best series – Yay! : Libraries having funding woes – boo! : Indie bookstores on the upswing – Yay! The last two stories are both pretty awesome! No one should ever accuse taxonomists of having no sense of humor or whimsy. I am fascinated by all the controversy surrounding Shakespeare so that was a very interesting read! (her job sounds kind of awesome really) I have always been rooting for the side that there was really one guy who wrote all the plays – that he was just that talented so I’m glad there is more evidence this is the case. Fascinating!

I tried to keep the bad news separated by good so it didn’t look too depressing! I’m glad you enjoyed this weeks’ links. 🙂
