News & Notes – 2/23/2019

February 23, 2019 News & Notes 3

News & Notes is a Saturday post featuring book- and publishing-related news, links to interesting articles and opinion pieces, and other cool stuff

Book News

  • Plagiarism rears its ugly head again. And Romancelandia is up in arms. Cristiane Serruya apparently plagiarized from upwards of 35 well- and lesser-known authors. I summarized the #CopyPasteCris  story from its start on Monday through Thursday morning, with links. Lots and lots of links.
  • The Nebula finalists have been announced (Tor.com), and the slates all look pretty strong. I’m especially delighted to see Mary Robinette Kowal’s The Calculating Stars among the Best Novel finalists, along with Spinning Silver (Naomi Novik), Trail of Lightning (Rebecca Roanhorse), and several other titles that have garnered a lot of attention this year. Also, Black Panther and Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse are both finalists for Dramatic Presentation.

That’s all for this week—I spent all my time following and writing up the plagiarism story!

I’m glad to know you’re reading them! It’s always interesting pulling them together. Some stuff I come across as I’m on the internet during the week, and then I try to do check my major sources—Publisher’s Weekly, The Guardian, Shelf Awareness, Book Riot, and LitHub—toward the end of the week.

“Read until the stars go out”… I love it.

Thanks for the link to the Nebula finalists! I get Tor’s emails, but don’t always take the time to read them. I want to read several of the finalists but haven’t read any yet (in both the Best Novel, and YA Novel categories) so I’m curious to see which wins.
