Book News

  • The 2019 Locus Awards Finalists were announced May 7. It’s a strong and diverse list. One of my favorite books of last year, The Calculating Stars, is up for best SF novel, and The Underwater Ballroom, a really wonderful anthology of SFF stories woven around the idea of an underwater ballroom, is up for best anthology.
  • The 2018 Nebula Award Winners were announced May 18. (Locus Magazine) The winning works include The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal (yay!) for best novel, Aliette de Bodard’s The Tea Master and the Detective for best novella, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi for best YA/Childrens (the Norton Award), and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse got the Bradbury Award for best script.

Literary Losses

Herman Wouk, author of The Caine MutinyThe Winds of War, War and Remembrance, Marjorie Morninstar, and several other novels, died May 17, 2019, less than two weeks before what would have been his 104th birthday. The Caine Mutiny is perhaps his best-known and most well-received work; it won a Pulitzer Prize, Wouk adapted into a stage play, and within three years, Columbia Pictures released the movie, which starred Humphrey Bogart as Capt. Queeg. The Winds of War and War and Remembrance both became TV miniseries, and Marjorie Morningstar also became a film.
