Last Week

My stepdad’s health is improving, thank goodness! He is out of the hospital and recovering at home. It wasn’t COVID-19, but a serious bacterial infection. We’re all grateful that he received good care, and that he is on the mend. Tonight, we’re having a Zoom party with my side of the family, so I’ll be able to see with my own eyes how he is doing. The party is a birthday celebration for someone in the family, with each household providing their own cake or dessert. Should be fun!

Last Sunday, we had a nice long Zoom gathering with Mr. Bookwyrm’s side of the family. It was great to see my siblings-in-law and all the nieces and nephews. We got to “meet” our adorable great-niece for the first time; she is nearly a year old now. We spent the whole time catching up on what everyone is doing, and agreeing that we miss getting together… so we decided meet via Zoom once a month. Whenever I feel frustrated that I can’t go see our families, I remind myself how lucky we are to have the technology to stay in touch even during a pandemic.

I’m plugging along with Tour de Fleece, trying to finish up a couple of spinning projects I started as far back as last winter. I’m on the second of the two now, and will soon be able to start a brand-new project. I plan to spin something from the stash, but I’ll decide what based on my mood at the time. I’m also nearly done with the shawlette or decorative scarf I have been knitting.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: On Sunday, I finished Once Ghosted, Twice Shy (Alyssa Cole) for the COYER readathon in support of Black authors, then plunged into The Corpse with the Crystal Skull by Cathy Ace for this week’s tour. After that, I finished up my reread of Swallowdale by Arthur Ransome. Currently, I’m reading Get a Life, Chloe Brown because it’s only checked out for another week, and Powers That Be because a review of the trilogy got me thinking about rereading it again. And I’m still reading Riviera Gold (ARC) by Laurie R. King. (Click titles for my review or to see the title on Goodreads.)

Listening: Just a few podcasts. I haven’t decided on a new audiobook yet. I might continue with my Harry Potter re-listen, or try something else.

Watching: We watched two Miss Marple mysteries, A Caribbean Mystery and Nemesis; a Cadfael episode, “The Virgin in the Ice”; Captain America: The Winter Soldier (all for the second time); and saw Ant-Man for the first time. To celebrate July 4, we rewatched 1776 (the musical.)

    I’m happy to hear your stepdad’s health is improving! These are scary times indeed. I miss my mom so much! Even if we video call each other a couple of times per week. It’s just that we were supposed to be in Norway now, and together, so it’s hard to be away from each other…

    You have some great-looking books here, and I hope you’ll enjoy them all.

    Ooo… The Relentless Moon! Lucky you. I completed The Fated Sky this week and loved it. So glad to hear that your stepfather is on the mend and that you managed to have some virtual family time. It’s not the same, but it is something of a lifesaver to keep us all in touch. Take care – and have a good week.

    We’ve also done a couple Zoom family birthday parties. It’s hard knowing how much we’ve missed, all the birthdays, holidays, etc., but it’s nice to find ways to see each other when we can.

    I think some families are doing more get togethers now than before the pandemic. But with families scattered across the country it is great to have the technology. I’m doing more helping my daughter with knitting than knitting myself but I’m ok with that. I enjoyed Get a Life Chloe and now I have Take a Hint Dani from the library. Enjoy your week!

    Zoom and various other video call apps have been amazing during all this. I can only imagine how isolating and damaging it would have been if this had happened years ago without the ability to stay in touch like we do… I mean, it’s been hard enough as it is!

    Get A Life, Chloe Brown is on my kindle waiting for me to get to it. Are you enjoying it so far? I hear lots of good things and even though I haven’t read it yet, I’m excited for Take A Hint, Dani Brown.

    My parents insist on the zoom routine we established during the pandemic be continued, even though we can physically visit again.
