July 12, 2020 Sunday Post 17

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

Last Week

My stepdad continues to improve, day by day. Reports from the rest of the family are good, although we worry a bit about family members in Texas and Arizona, where cases are skyrocketing. Mr. Bookwyrm and I are fine. So far, the case load in our county hadn’t been too bad, but this week, there were five new cases where my husband works, all in different buildings… not a good sign. (He is working from home, thank goodness, so he wasn’t exposed.)

Our cable internet was out for most of the week — or rather, on and off, but mostly off. It started Monday. We called the cable company, and the soonest they could schedule a tech to come to the house was late Friday afternoon. He was able to solve some of the issues by having us switch out our modem. He didn’t even have to come inside, just gave us the new unit to install, and took back the old one. The internet connection is more stable now than it was earlier in the week, but it still drops out occasionally. Apparently, there are some problems with the signal coming through the cable box at the top of the drive, so a maintenance crew will have to come out this week to fix that. (The tech only deals with issues inside the house.)

The outages during the week meant I couldn’t do as much blogging or blog visiting as I would like. That’s why there was no News & Notes post yesterday. Luckily, I had a couple of reviews almost ready to go, so I was able to post them during the short intervals when the internet stayed on long enough.

On the plus side, I had to work on clearing my desk and the area around it in case the tech had to come inside to work on the modem or the wiring. Now my study (office/library) looks better than it has in a long time! I still have some decluttering and filing to do, but I’m working on it.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished Riviera Gold (ARC) by Laurie R. King, and really enjoyed it. I finished rereading Powers That Be (Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough), and decided I wasn’t in the mood to finish the trilogy. I also finished Get a Life, Chloe Brown, and I started An Extraordinary Union for a COYER Challenge readathon; I love both of them. And I started two more ARCs: Deadly Touch (Heather Graham) and The Relentless Moon (Mary Robinette Kowal) (Click titles for my review or to see the title on Goodreads.)

Listening: With the internet down and too little cellphone bandwidth in this area, I couldn’t listen to any of my Audible books. Instead, I have been listening to podcasts that I downloaded before the internet went out: mainly Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, 99% Invisible, and Imaginary Worlds.

Watching: We watched another Cadfael episode, “The Devil’s Novice,” and an episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, “The Dancing Men.” (The latter is the Jeremy Brett series, from the 1980s.)

Sorry to hear about the internet problems – Hopefully they will be able to get all fixed for you soon! But it still sounds like you a really good week of reading, which thankfully internet is required for, and great to hear you stepdad is continuing to improve. Take care and happy reading! 😃

I’m happy your husband wasn’t exposed, and that your stepdad is improving. These are scary times and hopefully it will all end soon. You had a great reading week! I’m slowly getting back in the reading mood, as I’ve had a slump for most of the quarantine. I can’t wait to read Get a Life, Chloe Brown, as I’ve seen a lot of people loving it! Stay safe and happy reading!

Sounds like a trying week with all the internet disruptions. I hope it’s back to normal soon! Also, go figure it took me several tries to reply to this because of internet issues. smh
The Language of Ghosts sounds awesome! Apparently I already had it on my tbr but that’s the first time I’ve seen the cover! I hope it’s a good read!
    Have a great week! 🙂

I am glad your stepdad is doing better. It is scary in other states, I am also worried about friends and family.

There would be a RIOT in my house is the internet went out lol. OMG! Pray that never happens here. 🙂

Have a great week, Lark! Happy Reading!

Our internet is spotty all the time, I think it has to do with us being in a rural area and a small company. Hope you get it sorted. Great selection of books you have, hope you have a great week!

  6. Katherine

Internet issues drive me absolutely crazy. Hopefully all will be resolved soon but glad you are getting some productive stuff done. The Listening Eye is one of my favorite Wentworth books but it has been too long since I read it. I also like the look of the Graham books. I have her last trilogy of Krewe books I need to read and then I’m grabbing those. Have a great week.

  7. Anne - Books of My Heart

It is horrible when Internet doesn’t work well. I’ve become so dependent on it. My computer was slow and I was forced to load updates and run scans this week. I need to file things and declutter my desk but have no motivation to do it. Sigh. I just finished Take a Hint Dani Brown, and I loved Chloe too.

Have a wonderful week and stay well!

We had that happen, well not the modem but the outside issue. They came out and worked on the box outside. Glad you are both safe and your stepdad is improving. Hope this week is a good one!

Our virus cases keep going up everyday so we’re just staying home and continuing with the lockdown.

All of your books look so good. I have to add a few to my wishlist. Hope you have a great week!

    My Sunday Post is here.

Urg! How miserable – I hate it when I cannot access the internet and I hope that your issues will be shortly resolved. I hope the coming week is a better one for you.

  11. Heather @ Random Redheaded Ramblings

Glad to hear your stepfather is getting better, it is so worrying, the cases seem to be continuing to rise in the States. They do seem to have dropped here in Scotland but occasionally there is a spike in one area.

I’d hate it if I could connect but I think on the other hand a couple of days digital detox might be nice!

    Have a good week.

Sorry to hear about the internet issues! It drives me nuts on the rare occasion my internet plays up. 🙁 Fingers crossed it’ll be all sorted soon but it sounds like replacing the modem helped enough to tide you over until they do the outdoors stuff.

  13. Shelleyrae @ Book’d Out

It’s incredible how much we have come to rely on the internet so much, and even more now in lockdown. I hope your troubles are solved.

Wishing you a great reading week
