Last Week

Last Sunday, I finally tried my hand at cutting Mr. Bookwyrm’s hair. It came out pretty well. Not quite professional, but not the wild-man look he was sporting! It’s a good thing it turned out all right, because I’ll be doing it for a while. Soon it will be his turn to cut mine. Luckily for both of us, I had reverted to a simple, all-one-length cut before the pandemic, because it was easier to care for with a frozen shoulder. It should be easier to cut, too.

We have two family gatherings via Zoom this weekend. Last night was our sort-of-nephew’s birthday party (not related, but close friends of the family), and tonight my husband’s family is holding our second monthly get-together. It’s nice to be able to see people even when we’re apart, and both families think we may go on doing this even after the pandemic is over, in one form or another. Maybe not as often—people’s lives will get busier—but every few months.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I read Tea & Treachery (Vicki Delany; ARC) for Monday’s blog tour post, and whipped through the recently released The Obsessions of Lord Godfrey Cavanaugh by Stephanie Laurens (meh; review coming up this week.) I finished my nighttime reread of The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey early in the week, and started rereading Fortune’s Fool by the same author. And I squeezed in a few more pages of An Extraordinary Union, which I am savoring rather than racing through. (Click titles for my review or to see the title on Goodreads.)

Listening: I have been listening to podcasts, mainly Harry Potter and the Sacred Text and Imaginary Worlds. If you haven’t encountered HP and the Sacred Text before, it’s a deep dive into the Harry Potter books, and I’ve really been enjoying it. I’ll try to write up a review at some point.

Watching: We’ve been watching the 1980s Adventures of Sherlock Holmes mysteries starring Jeremy Brett. And we continued our Marvel series rewatch with Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok (which I love.)

      I would be nervous to cut my own hair, too. I’m glad I have Mr. Bookwyrm. I should be able to coach him through it. Really, all I need is the split ends cut off, though. I’m kind of enjoying having it long again.

    Go you with the haircutting:)). Himself has now asked me to continue cutting his hair, rather than him returning to the barber, as he thinks I do as good a job!

    I haven’t read any Mercedes Lackey for a very long time – but I enjoyed her writing style. Thank you for reminding me of her work! Have a peaceful, healthy week, Lark.

      Well done cutting your husband/partner’s hair!

      I do love the early and mid-career Lackey books in particular. I’ve been reading her basically since Arrows of the Queen came out—so, as long as she has been publishing novels.

    Well it’s sort of a DIY time of learning new skills and handling things differently. Everything changes over time, so I’m comfortable. I have hopes that some of these family Zooms allow people to get together more often even after this ends. I’m particularly interested in An Extraordinary Union. Enjoy some great reads this week!

      It is indeed a time of learning new skills and DIY-ing whatever we can! I’m DIY-ing the physical therapy for my frozen shoulder, because I’m really nervous about going into a PT office. Fortunately (if you can call it that), I did PT for the other shoulder when it was frozen two years ago, and I kept most of my handouts and equipment, so I can sort of reconstruct what they had me doing back then. If I don’t make progress after a few months, though, I’ll have to give in and make an appointment.

      I definitely recommend An Extraordinary Union! I hope you get to read it at some point.

      We figured it would be best to get a set of clippers and learn to use them. And I already had haircutting shears, from years and years ago when I had bangs. Given the way case loads are skyrocketing in the US, we’re both more comfortable avoiding salons for now.

    Go you with the haircutting! Mr. Wyrm bought himself some clippers a little while back, and gave himself a (long) buzzcut because he was sick of his accidental 70’s hair. I also chopped off my hair: I had wanted to remove 10-12 inches before lockdown started, so it was easy enough to lop off about 6 inches. When haircuts are allowed (and safe) again, I’ll have it properly taken care of. But for now? My hair’s still long enough (and usually in a ponytail) so any unevenness isn’t noticeable. Not that I’m seeing people these days.

      I’m not seeing people either, except the occasional necessary doctor visit. And Mr. Bookwyrm only goes out for work (occasionaly, when he can’t do something from home) and curbside grocery pickup. We’re both trying very hard not to get COVID.

      We considered a buzzcut for Mr. Bookwyrm, but… I don’t think it would suit him. And I was able to teach myself to cut it—thank goodness for YouTube! I’ll need to do it again in a month, though, because I was pretty cautious on the first try.

        Yup, I run to the grocery approximately every other week and we get take-out now and then to support our local restaurants. But other than that… we’re at home.

        Buzzcut is not my favorite look on Mr. Wyrm, but it doesn’t look bad and he decided he preferred to do it himself than have me cut it for him. So that was the result!
