Last Week
I’ve been working all week, and haven’t done much else. Last night, we had a birthday party on Zoom for Robin and our nephew’s partner. Next month, we’ll have one for my brother-in-law, our nephew, and our like-a-niece. (What do you call someone who has been like a niece since birth, but isn’t actually related?) I do enjoy this trend of family Zoom parties — it helps us stay connected! Next weekend, we’ll have our monthly virtual get-together with Mr. Bookwyrm’s side of the family, and hear how (and if!) school is going for our teacher niece, the niece who just started grad school, and the nephew who is a sophomore in college.

What I’m Reading/Watching
Reading: I started The Language of Ghosts (Heather Fawcett; ARC), but put it down in favor a reread of Nora Roberts’ Key Trilogy: Key of Light, Key of Knowledge, and Key of Valor.) Rereading is more my speed when I’m swamped with work. My brain gets tired after hours of reading and analyzing nonfiction text!
I also started a library hold, The Hoarder in You. The author, a psychologist who worked with the show Hoarders, believes that hoarding is one extreme of a spectrum, and that many of us (including those who collect) have some of the same feelings and thoughts that make it hard for hoarders to get rid of things, but to a lesser, non-clinical degree. By examining the behavior of hoarders, we can learn how to counteract our own tendencies to accumulate stuff. In essence, it’s a book about decluttering for people who aren’t hoarders (she calls them non-hoarders), that starts by looking at people who are. I’m not sure yet if it’s an approach I agree with, or even whether I will finish the book.
Oh, and I read articles about the Democratic National Convention, because I didn’t really have time to watch it live.
Audiobooks: I will probably finish Clean Sweep this week; I’ve got less than two hours left. Podcasts: Side Door, from the Smithsonian.
Watching: Mostly we watched Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert, because I didn’t have time to watch much else.

A Most Improper Magick is known in the US as Kat, Incorrigible, and it’s a marvelous, funny, MG historical fantasy by one of my favorite authors. This is the 10th-anniversary UK edition, and I couldn’t resist. The picture doesn’t do it justice; the blue is all foil, so the the cover shimmers.

Your zoom calls sound great. Our family has been doing FaceTime calls and our larger family has a WhatsApp group where we text and put up videos. That has been a great way to keep in touch. I think staying in touch with family and friends during this time is really important.

It’s good to keep busy. I like the feeling of getting some things finished and I’m enjoying my organized desktop SO much. It may not last but I love it.
It’s great you can do those family talks on Zoom. I hope this kind of thing continues even when we can get around.

Yay! I remember watching the Jetson’s as a kid and thinking that we would be talking and seeing each other on phones and computers by the year 2000.(lol) We’ve definitely come so far, and so many ways to stay connected these days. Hope you can get in some relaxation soon. Hugs, RO

It’s lovely to be able to Facetime with Robin now and then, and do these family Zoom parties and get-togethers. Back when I was in college, I had to call my parents collect on a landline from my dorm room! And I could only call a few times each semester because of the cost. When Robin went to college, we had cellphones and there was no charge between phones on the same family network, which made frequent calls a possibility. None of us had a smartphone, though, so it was just voice unless we did a Skype call. Now it’s so easy!
