Last Week
So, after several weeks of deliberation, we finally bought the new car to replace our dying van. We decided on a Subaru Outback, finalizing the paperwork and driving it home on Wednesday. It’s a really comfortable ride, and plenty of cargo space for groceries or luggage (whenever we can travel again.)
In book news, I participated in the Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, although I didn’t read anywhere near 24 hours due to other commitments and the need for sleep. Still, I did pretty well, completing one ebook ARC (All the Colors of Night) from start to finish, plus 3 hours 20 minutes of The Night Circus in audiobook format, and 13% of Homicide in Hardcover (Kindle.)

What I’m Reading/Watching
Reading: I read Parting Breath, an Inspector Sloan mystery by Catherine Aird, and All the Colors of Night, the forthcoming paranormal romantic suspense novel by Jayne Ann Krentz (ARC.) I started Homicide in Hardcover (Kate Carlisle) for the COYER book club, but goofed on the date of the book club chat — it’s today, not next weekend, so I missed it. Next up are A Darker Shade of Magic (V. E. Schwab), which I promised Robin I would read, and The Duke and I (Julia Quinn; reread) for a Bridgertons group read on Instagram. Listening: I finished Catfishing on CatNet by Naomi Kritzer, which I really loved. I am about a quarter of the way through The Night Circus for the second time. It’s such a beautiful book! But I had forgotten so many details and even plot points.
Watching: Mostly All Creatures Great and Small (the 1970s version.) We finished Season 1 and have started on Season 2.

Great job on the Dewey Readathon! I was going to save All the Colors of Night for November, but I needed that sort of quick, engrossing, but not too scary read, so I dove in.

My dad just bought a Subaru this year and he loves it. My sister and her husband have driven them for years. We might have to look into it the next time we need to buy a car!

They are really good cars, with a record for reliability and durability. And if you live somewhere that it snows, they are excellent AWD vehicles.

My dad and his wife have an Outback and they absolutely love it and it’s held up to lots of abuse. I think the only complaint I’ve heard is that my dad said he feels like he needs to duck down a little to see clearly out of the windshield but he’s also very tall. He did not pass that particular gene on to me though! I like the Kate Carlisle series and am really wanting to read more Catherine Aird. I had a couple of her books on my shelf that I brought up here but I haven’t read them yet. Have a great week!

My parents are on their second or third Outback, I think… and they sold us their last one for Robin, so Robin is driving it now. They’re good cars. Luckily, neither of us is too tall for it, and the seat adjustment and sightlines are good for me (I’m short.) But my husband will be the main driver. I got to be primary driver on the last three new (or new-ish) cars (for good reasons each time), so it’s definitely his turn.
I love Catherine Aird, especially her first 10 books or so. She has this dry, understated wit; she is keenly observant; and I really like Inspector Sloan and the hapless Crosby.

Congratulations on the new ride! I’ve heard that’s a nice car. Now you won’t have to worry about any issues when you guys are out and about. No challenges for me, but I have been enjoying looking at Top 10 Lists quite a bit, and yes, even though I’ve stepped up the exercise, still watching too much Netflix(lol) Hallmark and Lifetime added Christmas movies this past weekend, so that sure didn’t help either.(lol) Stay safe and be well! Congrats on the new car! I’ve considered an Outback, but for just the two of us it seems like too much car. When I eventually replace my current car (a Mini Cooper) I’ll probably look at electric sedans.
I’m glad you enjoyed Catfishing on Catnet! I really enjoyed that one, too. And one of these days I will re-read The Night Circus. I listened to it the first time, so next time I will be reading it for myself.

We talked about getting a hybrid or plug-in electric. But we were replacing a minivan, so we’re used to a LOT of cargo space. And we wanted something that will work for long road trips (luggage plus a plug-in cooler plus maybe other stuff.) And also something that could tow a small, ultralight trailer (like a teardrop or maybe a Scamp), because if COVID-19 persists, that may be the only way we are able to see our Robin, my parents, and our siblings and their families.
Last time I listened to The Night Circus, I told myself I would read it the next time… but honestly, I love listening to it, so maybe I’ll read it next time LOL!

Yeah, what you’re replacing (and therefore what you’re used to and what you need it for) makes a huge difference. Just about anything I get will be bigger than my Mini, so I don’t have the same concerns with a reduction in space.

I don’t think I’d ever be able to do the Dewey readathon… I don’t have the attention span or stamina anymore to read like that. 🙁
