Last Week

This week, we saw the second play of our Broadway touring season, The Play That Goes WRONG. It was hysterical! I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard or that much in months. It’s a very slapstick farce, sort of Agatha Christie meets Monty Python meets the Three Stooges. Afterward, my husband said, “I think you really needed that” (or words to that effect.) Yes. Yes, I did.

The rest of the week was relatively uneventful. My birthday was this week, but other than the play earlier in the week, we kept it pretty low key (by my choice), celebrating quietly at home with cake and ice cream, cards and a few presents (Captain Marvel and several braids of spinning fiber — yay!) I had gotten my major birthday and Christmas present early, about a month ago — a little travel spinning wheel, which I love! It occurs to me that I never showed it to you, so here it is:

It folds down relatively flat for transport, and is small enough in its carry-bag to fit in the overhead compartment of an airplane. So I’ll be taking it along on my Christmas vacation, and Robin and I can spin together for the first time.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: This week, I read A Legacy of Murder, a mystery by Connie Berry that lies somewhere between “cozy” and “traditional”; I liked it very much. I also read Heather Graham’s latest Krewe of Hunters book, The Stalking, and Someone to Remember by Mary Balogh (ARC.) Thanks to Tea & Strumpets‘ discussions of the first two Bridgerton romances (episodes 6 and 7 of their podcast), I decided to reread Julia Quinn’s The Viscount Who Loved Me. I’m still reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Becky Chambers) for #ReadForGrace, and I’m debating what else to start next. (Click titles for review or Goodreads links.)

Listening: I started listening to The Perilous Gard, one of my favorite books to read in October. I was surprised to realize that I have never done a full-scale review of it, though I’ve included it in a number of Top Ten posts, including a Halloween book list. I am also in the middle of episode #007 of Tea & Strumpets, about The Viscount Who Loved Me. I decided to reread the book before finishing their review/discussion, which is spoilery for newbies but great fun for people who have already read the book.

Watching: In addition to the play I talked about above, we have been watching season 5 of Eureka. I really don’t want it to come to an end! And last night, we started a rewatch of The Secret Adversary, the first Tommy and Tuppence mystery — not the newer remake, but the 1983 version starring Francesca Annis and James Warwick.

    I miss the days when I had a subscription to plays and also music events. I may have to look into that. My daughter hasn’t had that and at her age I had both. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it and Happy birthday! Have a lovely week and enjoy your reading!

      I have an not-very-portable Ashford Traditional, but I’ve been eyeing a travel wheel for a year now. I’m really excited to have gotten one!

    Happy belated birthday! I am all about the low key birthday. It makes my mother nuts, because she always wants to have the wait staff sing, if we go out (which we did this year). Me? I just want some cake and free meal. Easy, right? That play sounds like so much fun. Monty Python was an obsession when I was a teen. So funny.

    Happy belated birthday! Sometimes low-key celebrations can be the best. I love your new wheel! I’ve been wanting a double treadle wheel, maybe a travel wheel would be the way to go. Hmm. Things to consider.

    How are you liking Long Way to a Small Angry Planet? I’ve been meaning to start that one, but haven’t yet.
