The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

 My Week

Last Sunday’s concert went really well! I was really proud of the two choruses I direct. The Junior chorus (ages 5-11, plus a few older students as mentors) sang the best they have all semester. So did the Youth chorus (ages 11-18, plus some new graduates and some adults as mentors.) The Youth chorus received a lot of compliments on how beautifully their voices blended, particularly in a slow, quiet, and harmonically challenging piece. As for the adult chorus (in which I sing, rather than direct), we did pretty well, and my voice held out for the high notes despite the cold I’ve been fighting.

Thanksgiving was quiet, with just the two of us at home. We made a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings, though. We’ll be eating leftovers for the next week!

We had to put off Friday’s scheduled Falconry Experience because I had an unexpected minor medical procedure in the middle of the week. I’ll be fine, but I just didn’t feel up to the 4-hour drive (each way!) and the walking required. We’ll probably reschedule for sometime in February or March, once it warms up a little.

We’re planning to spend today taking down the fall decorations and putting up the Christmas tree. And it’s time start playing Christmas music, too! As for the rest of the week, I’ll be working a lot, but I’ll try to do at least a little blog visiting and review writing.

 

Challenge Update

Thanks to a bunch of rereads, I’m now only 3 books behind on my Goodreads challenge (instead of 7!) However, I haven’t read anything for The Backlist Reader Challenge in a while, so I probably won’t make my goal. I’ve been debating whether to sign up for COYER, but perhaps I should take a break from challenges for a bit!

For those who are wondering: Yes, I will host The Backlist Reader Challenge again in 2019. The sign-up post will go up on Monday, Dec. 3.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  For my ongoing Ngaio Marsh series binge this week, I reread Death at the Bar, Surfeit of Lampreys (also known in the U.S. as Death of a Peer), Death and the Dancing Footman, and Colour Scheme. I also reread several Agatha Christie mysteries: The Secret of Chimneys and Destination Unknown (AKA So Many Steps to Death.) And I read The Christmas Wishing Tree, the most recent Eternity Springs romance by Emily March, which was sweet and Christmassy. Finally, in memory of William Goldman, who died last week, I’m still rereading The Princess Bride—I’m taking my time and savoring it.

In ongoing books, I really need to get back to The Underwater Ballroom (anthology; ARC), and I haven’t looked at Year of Wonder: Classical Music for Every Day at all for the last few weeks.

Listening to: Only one or two Imaginary Worlds podcasts.

Watching: Mr. Bookwyrm and I are watching Dr. Strange for about the third time. Earlier in the week, I watched The Seven Dials Mystery and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? Both are adaptations of Agatha Christie novels, unrelated to each other in terms of story, but starring the same two actors, Francesca Annis and James Warwick.

I’ve had The Other Miss Bridgerton on preorder for months; even though I’ve read the ARC, I wanted a finished Kindle copy. The Ngaio Marsh books weren’t on sale, but my physical copies had print too small for me to read comfortably. All the other books were on sale at some point this week.

    I hope you are feeling better after your medical procedure.
    This year I opted out of doing challenges and just stuck with COYER and one other. I actually missed doing them and plan to get back into the game next year. I think it helped my reading when I have a challenge to help me read more. (if that makes sense)

      Thank you, Michelle. It’s healing up, but slower than expected. I did decide to do COYER, and posted my sign-up today (Tuesday.) Other than that, I’ll do the Goodreads one, my Backlist reader, and probably Blogger Shame because I really need to deal with my review backlog.

    We had an early Thanksgiving with my in-laws, so we were eating leftovers for almost a week before actual Thanksgiving! So much turkey. We’ll probably start decorating for Christmas next weekend!

      Our tree is up and decorated, but we haven’t put the boxes away yet so the living room looks a bit cluttered! Have a lovely week and have fun decorating for the holidays!

    Woo! Hooray on holding out on high notes over the cold! I’ve always struggled with those when I got sick in high school. Being one of the few high note singers, I was kind of expected to hold the fort with the high notes, lol.

    I’m curious about COYER and the Backlist Reader challenge, though, since I’m in the process of cleaning out my ebooks and TBR shelf on Goodreads. Hopefully I’ll get it done and be able to get my butt into gear for reading some books!

      Same here. There were three of us assigned to Soprano I, and the other two were inconsistent in singing the highest notes. (I don’t mean they hit the wrong ones, just that they didn’t always sing it at all, or chose one of the lower notes.) Even in the concert, I was (unexpectedly) alone on one of the B-flats.

    I finished reading the Iron Druid series not too long ago. So much fun. When you are done, would love to hear your thoughts. Hope you are feeling better.

      I was reading them several years ago, but bogged down in book… four, I think. I got frustrated with Atticus’s refusal to learn from his own mistakes. I may just skip that one and start back up with the next one in the series.

          Oberon is the best thing about those books! And there’s a lot to like in them, even if I did get annoyed at Atticus. But I just love Oberon.

      I know; I feel the same way, or would if we had anyone to host! All our friends spend Thanksgiving with their own families. It’s been just the two of us for the last 6 years, since Robin went off to college. (Which was probably a good thing this year, as I was recovering from that minor procedure.)

      My mom invented a Thanksgiving leftovers casserole that we love. It’s layers of turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and french-cut green beans (not in that order, but I don’t have the order in my head.) At least two layers of each, with the top layer being stuffing drizzled with gravy. Bake about 30 minutes (until hot.) It’s delicious!
