December 16, 2018 Sunday Post 4

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

 My Week

I spent the past week in Utah with my dad and stepmom. Unfortunately, I had to work almost round the clock for about half the visit, but I got my index turned in to the authors on Tuesday. I’m still waiting for their OK and any changes they want, so I can send it to the editor. Once I turned it in, I was able to enjoy being with my dad and stepmother and brief visits with other family members as well.

Yesterday I flew to New Mexico, and my husband flew in from home. He missed his flight but was able to get on a later one, thank goodness! I am so glad to see him after a week apart, and we’re both happy we’ll be spending the holidays with Robin, my mom and stepdad, and my sister’s family. We’re looking forward to seeing several movies (Into the Spider-Verse and Mary Poppins Returns, at least), to games and family get-togethers and lots of love and laughter.

Speaking of Christmas, I still have a lot of Christmas shopping and knitting to do, and only 9 days to do it in. Yikes! But it will get done, along with lots of family time.

And look at all the reviews I posted this week! I’m trying to do better about writing and scheduling reviews soon after I read the book. I’ve discovered I prefer to jot my initial reactions down in a notebook, then write the review from that. My writing seems to flow more smoothly and it’s easier to organize my thoughts. I used to do it this way, but thought I could save time composing right in the blog editor. But that seems to be counterproductive, at least for me.

Challenge Update

I’m now about 5 books behind on my Goodreads challenge, and starting to wonder if I’m going to make it. On the plus side, COYER Winter 2018 is two weeks in, and I’m halfway to my unofficial goal. I’ve read 5 books (2 of them novellas), written 4 reviews, and posted 4 of them so far. As for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2018, I’m working on one book, and over the year I’ve read about 20 backlist titles out of my goal of 30—I just haven’t written reviews for most of them yet. I plan to try to get a few of those overdue reviews done before the 31st.

Also, signups for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2019 are open! If you want to tackle those older titles on your TBR pile, this is a great way to do it.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: Between working and visiting with my dad and stepmother, I didn’t get a lot of reading time in — at least not reading for fun! (I did plenty of reading for work.) But I did read Rendezvous and Affair by Amanda Quick, one of which counts toward COYER and both of which count for The Backlist Reader Challenge. I started the first book in Julie Ann Long’s Pennyroyal Green series, which I’ve been meaning to read for a while. And I’m still reading East by Edith Patou, another Backlist Reader Challenge book. I put my reread of The Princess Bride on hold for most of the week (I plan to get back to it soon), and my ongoing Ngaio Marsh series binge is on temporary hiatus as well.

Listening to: Christmas music.

Watching: I didn’t really watch much the past week.

It sounds like you’ve had a really insane week! It’s a bummer you had to work while visiting family, but it’s great that you and your husband were able to make flights work. Hopefully you’ll have time to read between the madness!

Yay for vacation holidays! I have to write the review within a day or so of reading or I can’t express my emotional reaction properly.

I really want to see Mary Poppins Returns! It’s supposed to be fantastic. Have a good week! Anne – Books of My Heart

I’m definitely signing up for your 2019 Backlist Readers Challenge! I’ll be posting my sign-up post at the beginning of next year and I’m very excited to tackle all those books on my TBR pile and list. 🙂
