Belated Sunday Post – December 20 (21!), 2020

December 20, 2020 Sunday Post 4

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

Last Week

This week, I finally pulled myself together enough to start decorating for Christmas — something I had planned to do much earlier in December. Saturday, we put up and decorated the Christmas tree. Yesterday (Sunday), I started work on the scene — our family’s tradition for several generations, a collection of small Christmas villages laid out under the tree. Today Mr. Bookwyrm and I will continue putting up the scene, and record my parts for the Christmas Eve service music. In the days to come, I’ll wrap presents, bake cookies and probably pumpkin bread (for Christmas morning), and make any of our traditional Christmas Day foods that can be made ahead, like corn pudding.

Looking ahead to 2021

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I interrupted my binge-reread of Jayne Castle’s Harmony/Ghost Hunters series (see last week’s Sunday Post) to binge-reread the Arcane Society novels by Jayne Ann Krentz and Amanda Quick. (Quick and Castle are, of course, pen names of Jayne Ann Krentz.) I got through seven books in seven days, so the last two weeks have improved my Goodreads Challenge stats considerably. The Arcane and Harmony series intersect with Midnight Crystal, which I’ll probably read sometime this coming week, and they stay intertwined for several more books.

Robin and several of their college friends invited me to join them for 12 nights of reading favorite Christmas and winter-themed picture books to each other via Google Meet. It’s been a lot of fun, revisiting favorites like Trouble with Trolls (Jan Brett), A Child’s Christmas in Wales (Dylan Thomas), The Wild Christmas Reindeer (Jan Brett), and The Mouse Before Christmas (Michael Garland.) Robin’s best friend Owl also introduced us to The Farolitos of Christmas (Rudolfo Anaya) and Auntie Claus (Elise Primavera), which are both delightful in very different ways. Still to come are The Christmas Day Kitten (James Herriot), The Polar Express (Chris Van Allsberg), and of course, The Night Before Christmas, which Robin will read from the copy that was mine as a child.

Listening to: Christmas carols, of course!

Watching: We watched How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Playing: Carcassonne, Dragonvale, and Merge Magic.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay kind… and may you find books a haven in the coming weeks.

The tree looks great and I hope you share a picture when you have the village set up. We have a village that I love but haven’t put it out the last couple of years and I miss it. The 12 nights of Reading sounds like a lovely reading list and perfect for the holidays! Hope you are having a lovely week.
