It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas! (Sunday Post – 12/23/2018)

December 23, 2018 Sunday Post 10

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimba, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

 My Week

It’s been a lovely week of family time, Christmas shopping (mostly online) and wrapping, games, and knitting. Oh, and singing—Robin and my mom sing in their church choir, and the new choir director graciously lets me join whenever I’m in town. This afternoon, we’re headed over to my sister’s house to play cards (and probably eat cookies.) And there are only two more days until Christmas!

Challenge Update

I’m now about 5 books behind on my Goodreads challenge, so I’ll probably fall short of my goal this year…but not by much, so I’m happy.  COYER Winter 2018 is now three weeks in. I’ve read 7 books (2 of them novellas), written 6 reviews, and posted all 6 of them so far. As for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2018, I’m currently reading two titles that I may or may not finish by the end of the year. And I hope to write at least a few reviews before the Jan. 3 deadline, for the 20+ books I read earlier in the year.

Signups for The Backlist Reader Challenge 2019 are still open! If you want to tackle those older titles on your TBR pile, this is a great way to do it. Signups stay open well into 2019, but after the first week or two of January, I’ll no longer post the link on Sundays. It will still be in the sidebar, though.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I reread  The Clairvoyant Countess (review) and Kaleidoscope by Dorothy Gilman, both for COYER. I also reread Garden of Lies by Amanda Quick (which I reviewed back in 2015.) I plan to return to East by Edith Patou and The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Ann Long.  And I’m still slowly rereading The Princess Bride.  My Ngaio Marsh series reread is on hiatus for now.

Listening to: Christmas music, and Founding MothersThe Women Who Raised Our Nation by Cokie Roberts, which I’m enjoying very much. Unfortunately, it’s “unabridged selections,” so at some point I’ll have to read the actual book to find out what, or rather who, I missed.

Watching: We watched Crazy People, an old favorite of my mom’s starring Dudley Moore. I’d forgotten how funny it is! And despite the very dated ’80s clothing, it holds up reasonably well, mostly because of Moore’s performance and because the very thought of blunt truth in advertising is still so preposterous that it’s ludicrous. We’ve also rewatched a couple of Foyles War episodes. Last night we got back on the Christmas movie train with The Holiday. I’m hoping to watch A Child’s Christmas in Wales tonight.

I thought about it, but I’d rather read what I want to read, and not worry as much about making the goal. It’s not really a competition, after all! I just use the Goodreads Challenge to keep track of what I’m reading and make sure I’m reading at a pace I’m happy with.

Kudos on getting pretty close to your reading goal. I know I totally suck at challenges, and already know I would fail at any goal.(lol) I did, however, get much more reading done this year than last year, which is pretty cool. Holiday is a pretty cool Christmas movie. I’m pretty much caught up with my holiday movies and one to watch tonight. Then it’s off to they Yule Log on the Hallmark Channel, Top Chef Reruns and reading. I sure hope your holiday is the best ever Lark! Hugs…RO

You are close on your challenges. They are only a suggestion anyway. I should probably do the Backlist Challenge just for all the books I buy and then don’t get to reading them. But I’m not ready to tackle it emotionally yet. I mean I have to have some things where I just read because I want to read. Right now I also have library books and my KU trial to read. So I can’t add more irons to the fire so to speak. I’m start with my ARCs and go from there.

Have the best holidays! Enjoy your reading whether it meets a challenge or not. Anne – Books of My Heart

I know what you mean about reading things just because you want to read them. That’s kind of why I started the Backlist Reader Challenge, to be honest. I have so many ARCs to read, and I wanted an excuse to read the stuff I’ve wanted to read for a while, but hadn’t gotten to.

“Enjoy your reading whether it meets a challenge or not.” Yes, definitely. And I wish you the same!
