Last Week

I hope you have had a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule, or whatever holiday you celebrate at this time of year! And if your celebrations include gift-giving, I hope you received at least one wonderful book.

Our celebrations were lovely. I joined Robin in the choir for Christmas Eve service. Christmas Day, we followed all our Christmas traditions: stockings (with tea and pumpkin bread), mimosas, present opening, brunch, more presents, and then some quiet time for all us introverts before a laid-back dinner. (We open our presents one at a time, taking turns, so everyone can enjoy and appreciate what each person gives and receives.) On Boxing Day we spent most of the day at my sister’s house, where we had lunch, presents, dinner, much laughter and conversation, and a plenitude of dogs to pet and cuddle — my nephew and his girlfriend brought their three beagle mixes, and my sister and her family have two dogs.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished and reviewed How the Dukes Stole Christmas, an anthology of novellas by Tessa Dare, Sarah MacLean, Sophie Jordan, and Joanna Shupe. I also peeked into Um: Slips, Stumbles, and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean (Michael Erard), a Christmas gift from my brilliant sister (and fellow indexer) who shares my love of language; I’ll be reading it over the next month or so. I’m rereading Take a Thief by Mercedes Lackey, which I started early in the week. I plan to return to Angel in a Devil’s Arms (Julie Anne Long; ARC) now that I have finished the Christmas romance anthology. And I’ve put Little Men on pause, because I have so many other books to read right now. (Click titles for Goodreads or my review links.)

Listening: The Wilhelm Conspiracy, the second book in the “Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James” series. Well, actually, no, I’m not. I won’t get back to it until I get home; there’s just too much going on here, and too much end-of-the-year blog stuff to take care of.

Watching: On Christmas night, we watched one of my favorite Christmas movies, A Child’s Christmas in Wales. And Robin and my parents introduced us to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. (I knew about the show, and I’ve been meaning to try it, I just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.)

Playing: Pounce (a fast-paced card game — think multiplayer, highly-competitive double solitaire on steroids) and Carcassonne.

    Lots of good books. Glad you had a lovely holiday. I got the Audible Escape deal 3 months for $2.00 and have been discovering and trying new authors. I’ve been delighted to find subgenres like paranormal, cozy mystery, thrillers and the like.
