September 12, 2021 Sunday Post 20

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

My Week

I thought a week without an index would be a quiet one, but I spent much of it catching on stuff for my Spinners and Weavers Guild, of which I am vice president. I’m responsible for the monthly program, and I’m on the exploratory committee that is considering the pros and cons of becoming a nonprofit, so there was plenty to do. All of it was interesting and much of it was fun, but I didn’t get a lot of blogging done.

I did, however, get some spinning done, finishing a lovely soft yarn that I am pretty pleased with even though it isn’t quite as even as I would like. I’ll try to put together a WIP Wednesday post this week to show it off, along with the other fiber-arts stuff I’ve been doing.

I also had two medical appointments this week, my yearly eye/vision appointment and my first-ever dermatology appointment. Both went well, and thankfully, I don’t need new glasses this time.

During the coming weeks, I have more projects than I have time to accomplish, which is… kind of a good problem to have. (Boredom? What’s that?) I want to start exercising again; it sort of fell apart during the last index, and I’m feeling the effects. There’s a lot of tidying and housework to catch up on. I want to start a new spinning project, although I haven’t yet decided which of my stash fibers to use. I’d like to tackle my backlog of book reviews. I’ll also be packing up some of Robin’s things to store until we’re ready to drive out there. There’s a book on best indexing practices I want to start reading, and I’d like to dig into the capabilities of the newest version of the indexing software I use; the developer added some new features which I haven’t had the time or energy to explore yet. So… plenty to keep me occupied and interested, but very little that’s time-critical.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I reread Someone to Love, the first Westcott novel by Mary Balogh. Coincidentally, I reread it five years to the day from when I read the first book! Then I reread Someone to Hold, the second book. (Reviewed in 2016 and 2017 respectively.) I’m debating a reread of the whole series. I also read The Dragon Conspiracy, book #2 in Lisa Shearin’s SPI Files series, which counts toward the COYER “Finish What You Started” series-completion readathon. Next up are Scales and Sensibility (Stephanie Burgis; ARC), and the third SPI Files book, perhaps a reread of the third Westcott book, and probably one or two of my library books. (Click title for Goodreads page or my review.)

Listening to: A Grave Matter, by Anna Lee Huber

Watching: We rewatched the first episode of Foyle’s War, a wonderful historical mystery series set in WWII Britain. (I reviewed it back in 2013.) The writing (much of it by Anthony Horowitz) is excellent, the ensemble cast are very good, and Michael Kitchen’s portrayal of Inspector Foyle is superb. He can convey more with subtle facial expressions than some actors can with their whole bodies; it’s masterful character acting.

For Review or Consideration

Many thanks to Stephanie Burgis and Five Fathoms Press for Scales and Sensibility! Pet dragons and Regency-era fantasy-romance are my catnip. Plus, it’s Austin-inspired! (And isn’t that cover gorgeous?!) I had already preordered the Kindle book, but when Stephanie offered me the chance to review an early copy, I jumped at it.

Library Haul

Library books: The Wizard’s Cookbook; The Cats of Tanglewood Forest; This Poison Heart

Purchased (Kindle, print, or audio)

Kindle: The Curse of the Pharoahs; Murder in an English Village. (Click title for Goodreads page.)

Audiobooks: The Moor;

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay kind… and may you find books a haven in the coming weeks.

I haven’t read any of DeLint’s books yet, although I keep meaning to. This one looked charming, and my library had a copy, so I thought I would give it a try.

Oh I love Foyle’s War SO much. I pretty much always have more things I want to do. But sometimes I get stuck or exhausted, or just tired of a project I can’t seem to progress on as quickly as I want. Good luck on sorting things out. I’m not sure if variety is best or to focus until one thing is complete to feel that accomplishment.

You always amaze me with how much you get done. I’m very distractible, so I tend to flit from project to project… which means I don’t end up completing as many as I would like, and they all take longer than they should. (That’s leisure or house projects, not work projects—I have deadlines on those!)

I know; I was so surprised when I looked my Goodreads “review” and realized the dates were identical, except the year. Not just the day I finished it, but the day I started it, too!

Thank you! I love spinning and knitting. As you say, they are relaxing, and at the end of it, I have something nice for myself or for a gift. 🙂

Sounds like a lot of fun projects! (Plus some less-fun housekeeping, but I guess we can’t ignore that for too long.)

I’m so looking forward to Scales and Sensibility! I saw the ARC call for reviewers, but since I’ve decided to not sign up for ARCs this year, I’m just waiting (more or less) patiently for my pre-order to arrive. I love the cover so much!
