My Week

It was a quiet, restful week. A new indexing project arrived Friday, so I’ll be working on it during the next few weeks. The weather has turned beautiful, and although there are a couple of 80+ degree days and thunderstorms in the near future, after that, it looks like low to mid-70s and sunny skies… perfect early-fall weather for taking walks.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished the sixth book in Lisa Shearin’s SPI Files series, The Phoenix Illusion, which wraps up my reading for the COYER “Finish What You Started” series-completion readathon. I also read The Vanished Days (Susanna Kearsley; ARC), which was lovely. I’m currently reading This Poison Heart (library book), Scales and Sensibility (Stephanie Burgis; ARC), Lightning in the Mirror (Jayne Ann Krentz; ARC), and A Yuletide Kiss (anthology; ARC.)  (Click title for Goodreads page.)

Podcasts: Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me; Smart Bitches, Trashy Podcast; 99% Invisible; The Allusionist; Imaginary Worlds

Watching: I almost never binge-watch, but I started the first season of Virgin River on Monday, and watched the first six or seven episodes in three nights. They have made some changes from the books, but so far the adaptation stays pretty true to the spirit of the books. I know a few spoilers for upcoming seasons that make me a bit apprehensive, though. I can already tell that they have made Jack less decisive and less confident than he is in the books, which bothers me—as does his interest in Mel when he’s still involved with another woman. (In the book, he calls things off with her fairly early on.)

We are also three episodes into Season 2 of Foyle’s War. We have watched these before, but it’s been so long, I have forgotten a lot of the plots and details, though the relationships and characters are etched in my memory. It’s a pleasure to revisit them.

    The weather has gotten pretty nice here but some nights have been colder than I like…lol. I have Scales and Sensibilities too! I hope you like it I haven’t had a chance to try it yet.

      The last season was my least favorite, tbh. But it’s such a wonderful show overall, well worth rewatching. My parents gave us the DVDs some years ago.

      The Wilder books were illustrated by Garth Williams, and I love his work. He also illustrated a charming picture book by Charlotte Zolotow, Over and Over, which was one of my absolute favorites as a very little girl.

    I’m not a good binge watcher either. To be fair I can’t binge read either. I’ve discovered that if I read two books in the same series right after each other I’ll get annoyed. I need to pick up the Jayne Ann Krentz. It’s been too long since I’ve read one of her books. Have a great week!

    We finally have rain here in the PNW! Its been a long dry summer and the rain feels wonderful.

    I’ve read Reflections, and it was one of my favorite reads last year. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you plan to review it so I can stop by.

    I love when it get’s colder! It’s getting colder over here, so it feels much more like Fall. So sad that’s its been raining for a couple of days!

    Have you read Prairie Fires? I just finished it and found it FASCINATING. And now I want to reread all the Little House books, even the ones I did not enjoy so much as a kid, like The Long Winter. Knowing more about the real life of LIW and the historical context of the books has brought even more depth into the story for me, even though for some it might be hard to have their image as the books as “true” punctured.

      I haven’t read it, but I’ll check it out! I knew that she fictionalized the books, though I’m unsure to what extent. Back in 2012, we visited the Wilder museum in Walnut Grove, MN; I wrote a post about it, with a lot of photos, if you’re interested.
