This Week

The weather has alternated between rainy and sunny this week, but we had several gorgeous days with temperatures around 60° F—my favorite weather. The azaleas are still in full bloom, and Mr. Bookwyrm made it home in time for a pre-dinner walk on Wednesday, so we both got to enjoy the woods and the flowers.

I’m attending an online conference this weekend, on singing past midlife (during/after menopause.) Yesterday’s sessions were very interesting and often informative, and I am looking forward to today’s sessions. I have increasingly struggled with my voice over the last four years or so, as I headed into and past menopause. It’s been a relief to hear about some of the things I can do to support my voice and keep singing in the coming years. Singing and making music has been so much a part of my life and my joy, ever since my earliest memories, that I simply can’t bear to give it up. It would be like giving up reading.

This coming weekend, I have another online conference, this time with the American Society for Indexing. It feels strange to be so busy on the weekends; after more than two years of pandemic, I’ve gotten used to really quiet weekends.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished reading A Perilous Perspective by Anna Lee Huber (ARC) for Tuesday’s review.I reread Closer to the Heart and Closer to the Chest (Mercedes Lackey; I reviewed them in 2015 and 2018 respectively), and also Exile’s Honor by the same author. I’m currently reading The Shadow of Memory by Connie Berry (ARC) for review, and reading The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics (Olivia Waite) and Beastly Bones (William Ritter) for COYER Book Club (although getting into the singing conference meant I can’t be at book group.)

Listening to: Frogkisser! by Garth Nix, and assorted podcasts.

Watching: The Great Tours: England, Scotland, and Wales (The Great Courses), and the 1975 BBC miniseries of The Secret Garden.

    I’m so glad you’ll be able to keep singing. I’m not sure if I sound any good while singing, I did get some compliments on it over the years, but it would be awful to give up something like that.

    Busy week for you! I hope you are able to preserve your quality singing voice for many more years if you gives you the same pleasure as your reading. I love Anna Lee Huber and I look forward to your review on Perilous Perspective if you get a chance. I was not able to get that arc and I haven’t read the previous one. It’s fascinating to read about a strong intelligent woman in the past, even if this one is only fiction!

    Geez, is singing another thing that gets messed up by menopause? I haven’t been singing in a choir lately, and feel a bit croaky and out of practice, but I attributed it to the pandemic … I have been blindsided by the health issues that leaped out of the woodwork with the big M, but that one would be an unwelcome addition.

    Anyway, good to hear you’ve found some support for your issues, and may singing continue to give you much joy!!

    Our weather has been back and forth between rain and sun, cold and warm too. Right now it’s sunny and warm. 🙂

    I hope this online conference helps you figure out how to still enjoy singing. I wonder if this is why Julie Andrews doesn’t sing as much anymore? I know she had throat problems, but I wonder if that’s a euphemism for problems after menopause? Good luck!

    That sounds like a really interesting conference—and a topic that I hadn’t really thought about before. There’s so little information given to women about menopause that it makes me really angry sometimes.

    I know what you mean about it being weird to have things planned for weekends. We have a dinner scheduled with some friends for this weekend and I signed up for a weaving course in May, and it’s bizzare to have to plan around things again.

Having never been able to carry a tune, I can’t relate but I can understand when something is that important/central to your life how hard it would be to lose it.
