June 5, 2022 Sunday Post 6

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

This Week

We had a quiet Memorial Day weekend. Mr. Bookwyrm grilled steaks on Sunday, and we enjoyed them for two nights. On Monday we watched the Memorial Day Concert on PBS. The rest of the week was pretty quiet, too. It was fairly hot all week, but a little cooler on Friday and yesterday – not cool, but comfortable.

I did some work on the blog, adding alt data to a bunch of images, as well as writing visual descriptions for a few of them. I know this is important because it provides accessibility for the visually impaired, but I admit that while I do usually supply the alt data, I rarely add descriptions to book cover images or author photos because I simply don’t have time. However, I will try to add visual descriptions to my own photos from now on. (The alt text and descriptions are not usually visible on the page, but can be read aloud by software used by the visually impaired.)

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I have had a hard time getting into books for the last week or two, so I went on a rereading binge this week with Mary Jo Putney’s Lost Lords series. I reread Loving a Lost Lord, Never Less Than a Lady, Nowhere Near Respectable, No Longer a Gentleman, Sometimes a Rogue (review) and Not Quite a Wife (review.) Now I’m finishing the series with Not Always a Saint (review). (I reviewed the last three in 2013, 2014, and 2015 respectively. Someday I will go back and review the first four books.)

I also started Miss Percy’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons by Quenby Olson, and The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews, and I’ll continue reading them in the week(s) to come. And I’m still reading—slowy, so as to savor it!—The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip, a gorgeous fantasy by an incredible writer.

Listening to: Mostly podcasts, while I wait for my hold on Invisible Women to come back in. I’ve been listening to Twenty Thousand Hertz, 99% Invisible, and Invisible Worlds—episodes from earlier this year that I missed.

Watching: Around the World in 80 Days (the 2021 series starring David Tennant.) We are three episodes in, and although it diverges signficantly from the book in some ways, I’m really enjoying it.

Sounds like a lovely restful holiday weekend. I picked up the Jayne Ann Krentz from the library and am really looking forward to getting to it. I enjoy her books a lot. Have a wonderful week!

  2. Anne - Books of My Heart

Quiet is good. I look forward to the quiet days. There seem to be a few people having trouble starting new books. I can be that way also, more so with ebooks than audio usually. I hope you find some ways to move forward.

Thank you, Anne. I’ve been having more trouble with it since the pandemic started, but I usually find a week (or two, or three) of rereading can rekindle my interest in new books. 🙂

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide looks really fun! I bought a copy, but haven’t started reading it yet. Hopefully soon.

I’ve been adding alt text to my blog images for new posts, but I haven’t gone back to add them to older posts yet. I did go through all my book cover images, though, and rename them to have the book title for the name instead of random strings of letters and numbers. I’m hoping that will be sufficient for accessibility, especially as I never include an image of a book cover without also listing the title (and author) in the post text either right before or right after it.

The temps this past weekend were lovely here, too. That’s supposed to change this week, though, and I’m not ready for temps to hit 100 or more. 🙁
