This Week

I’m working on an index; it’s due in about a week. So I’ll be pretty swamped until it’s done and turned in.

Tour de Fleece started Friday. It’s a spinning event that runs concurrently with the Tour de France. Frankly, I’m not that interested in the Tour de France, but Tour de Fleece gives me the motivation to get back to spinning on a regular basis, and the camaraderie is fun. I’m co-captaining a local team on Ravelry (noncompetitive, just for fun), with a friend from the Spinners and Weavers Guild. We’re getting together for an in-person meet-and-spin this afternoon, after my friend is done with the spinning class she teaches.

    I love hearing about your Tour de Fleece but I always found spinning to be where I drew the line as being more than I wanted to do. Well if you have to be busy indoors maybe the hot time of year is best for it.

      Spinning does take time away from knitting, and requires a fair bit of investment unless you spin exclusively on spindles. It’s a reasonable place to draw the line. I was going to draw the line at weaving, but lately I find myself drawn to it — at least the kind of simple weaving one might do with handspun yarn. (I’ve redrawn the line – no floor looms! I don’t have space for them anyway.) As for my knitting and spinning, I seem to gravitate toward one or the other depending on mood… sort of the way I used to (and to some extent still do) binge on one book genre for a bit, then switch to another.

    I hope you have such a great time with the Tour de Fleece. I’ve never done spinning before. I’ve always been interested in trying it, but I’m so out of shape that I don’t know if I could keep up with it.

    Oh I haven’t read the Riddle master books in eons. And I need to start strange New Worlds. The TOS era is my favorite so I’m a natural for that show. 🙂

    Good luck with your event! It sounds fun. And thanks for your comment too on my blog- I completely understand because I used to do the same thing- scouring the used bookstores for vintage SF titles. I miss that.

    Tour de Fleece is a brilliant name, I love it lol! And how cool that it conincides with Tour de France (which I also would have 0 interest in). I’ve always thought it’s cool that you spin – I’d love to learn but that’s going to have to come MUCH later in life as I can’t even imagine a moment I’ll have time to pick up a new hobby again. I hope you’re enjoying your event though!

    Have fun with your spinning! My best friend from high school’s mom and grandmother are/were active spinners and weavers. We go to a lot of minor league baseball games together and her mom always knits away while watching the game, which just amazes me. I would mess everything up. Her grandmother collected hair from my friend’s llamas and magically (as far as I’m concerned) turned it into a sweater for my friend’s dad.

      Knitting (something relatively easy) is a great way to keep my hands busy while watching something, I find—whether it’s a movie or, in your friend’s mother’s case, a game. I would love to turn a fleece into a sweater someday, but I’m not sure I have the ability to focus on a single project of that length for that long. But for a future project, I have some alpaca fleece in roving format (already cleaned and the fibers aligned), enough to spin for a lovely warm scarf.
