This Week

Indexing and yet more indexing. Also some knitting. Other than that, there’s not much to say about my week. The weather has been summer (though not unbearably hot this week, thank goodness.) Everyone in the family is well (thank goodness! So many authors posted this week about how they have Covid… Jim C. Hines, Rachel Hawkins/Erin Sterling, and Tessa Dare, off the top of my head. I’m glad our extended family seems to be staying healthy for now.) I haven’t done or made anything particularly noteworthy, but on the other hand, there have been plenty of little things that brought me moments of joy, from brewing and drinking a pot of my favorite tea to snuggling on the couch and knitting whilst watching All Creatures Great and Small.

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished rereading  With This Ring by Amanda Quick (reviewed 2018). I reread The Princess and Curdie, alternating between the Kindle edition and a 1959 hardcover in my collection. (I read on my Kindle in bed, so I don’t wake my husband.) I also read Ravished by Amanda Quick.

I am currently buddy-reading Marple: Twelve New Mysteries with Anne at Books of My Heart. We’re reading one story per day, and discussing them daily. So far, it’s a great collection. I’m also reading A Dreadful Splendor by B. R. Myers (ARC), Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin (ARC), and Mischief by Amanda Quick. I’m having a hard time staying focused on those three, but it’s not the fault of the books, just work-related stress.

Listening to: Threads of Life: A History of the World Through the Eye of a Needle, by Clare Hunter. If you are at all interested in sewing, needlework, or fiber arts, it’s fascinating, but “a history of the world” is a bit misleading.

Watching: All Creatures Great and Small Season 2, which I am loving!

Print: I’m a little behind on posting the print books I’ve gotten in the last few months, but here are four that came in in the last month or so. The first three I ordered used through Abe Books; the last one I preordered from Book Depository because I really wanted the British cover. (The US edition is coming soon, with a different cover.) Kindle: Thanks to a great hack I saw on La La In the Library, I have discovered a whole new way to keep tabs on when Kindlebooks I want go on sale.* And my ereader is groaning as a result. As you can see, I bought a bunch of the Swallows and Amazons series.

    Glad you’ve been able to find some good moments this week. 🙂 And Covid does seem to be still everywhere, doesn’t it? I hadn’t seen those author announcements but yikes.

    yes Covid is still popping up all over. We stay home and mask. I’m loving the Christie book and you have such great insights. I went right to my library and got 2 Amy Herzog books to look at (digitally) If I like them I’ll look into getting them in print. I find I prefer cookbooks and knitting books in print.

    It seems like COVID is much more contagious now, but not quite as deadly. I avoided it for two years and I’m triple vaxxed yet I got it this summer. I felt worse than I did with the flu.

    I know so many people who have gotten covid recently. Both of my parents and their respective spouses did and all four of them have avoided it until now. My mother even got a boomerang case. Luckily, they were all fully vaccinated and had mild cases but it was crazy. You got so many great books! Nora Roberts’ Jewels of the Sun is one of my favorites. Have a great week!

      I’m glad your parents and their spouses had mild cases. I’m sure my four parents will get it eventually (as we all will, I expect), and I’m praying that when they do, theirs will be mild, too.

      I enjoy that NR trilogy, though maybe not quite as much as her fantasy-romance books. (I mean, there’s a touch of fantasy in these, but they’re mostly contemporary.) But definitely enough that I want to get the Kindle copies to pair with my paperbacks! That’s a think I do: duplicate books I like to reread in Kindle, so that I can switch back and forth depending on where I am (and whether I’m reading in the dark.) That way, I don’t mess up my physical books by carting them around to the doctor’s office or on vacation, and I don’t wake my husband by turning on the light to read in the middle of the night.

      The US cover will be pretty, too, but this one really drew me. I do sometimes prefer the UK cover for books (when they are different), so Book Depository has been great for that.
