November 13, 2022 Sunday Post 4

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

Last Week

My Flamecraft game and extras finally came! I did the Kickstarter for this adorable tabletop game back in September 2021, over a year ago. I have been patiently waiting ever since. They started shipping to North America in September, but apparently my order was complicated (I got a bunch of the extras), so it was one of the last to be packed and shipped. But isn’t it great?! You can only see a few of the extras in the photo – the Bread Dragon plush, the Fancy Dragon mini-figurine, the art book (on the right), and the art prints. I also got an enamel pin, some additional cards for game play, and 7 bookmarks.

I probably won’t have a chance to play it until December — once NaNoWriMo is over, and I have people to play it with. But I can hardly wait!

Yesterday’s 40th anniversary program on the history of our local Spinners & Weavers Guild went off pretty well, considering how difficult it was to find any photographs before about 20013. (We donated our scrapbook and accumulated newsletters to the local Heritage Society, thinking they would be digitized. They haven’t been, and I can only get in to the physical archives on Saturday mornings, which didn’t work out. I have asked if we can borrow the materials back at some point to digitize them.)

I got my Covid (omicron) booster yesterday afternoon. It wiped me out and gave me a headache, which is why I’m so late posting this. I slept the entire morning, and have been pretty out of it all day today.

Graphic: NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)

NaNoWriMo update: My NaNoWriMo progress slowed a bit this week, because of the work I was putting in on the Guild history. But I managed to write at least something every day until Friday (when I spent the entire day and evening working on the guild history project.) And I hit or exceeded the daily goal at least half the days that I wrote. I should be able to catch up on word count now that I have a bit more free time. Total words written as of Thursday, 11/10: 14,160

What I’ve Been Reading/Watching

Reading: I haven’t been reading very much, because of NaNoWriMo. I finished rereading Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal (book #1 in the Glamourist Histories.) It’s a historical fantasy romance set in the Regency period, which puts it a little earlier than the time period of my NaNoWriMo project. Not only is it a lovely book in its own right, it’s also helping me keep the tone of the period dialogue in my mental “ear.” I plan to start the next book in the series this weekend.

I’m also reading No Plot? No Problem!, a book about writing a novel in a month by Chris Baty, the founder of NaNoWriMo.

Listening to: SO many episodes of the Writing Excuses podcast. I finished the first season and started the second. I also listened to the first epsidode of the Paper Defiance podcast, which focuses on indie bookstores; episode #1 is an interview with Leah Koch, co-owner of The Ripped Bodice, the first romance-only bookshop in the U.S. And I listened to a great interview with author Freya Marske (A Marvelous Light) on Smart Podcast Trashy Books.

Watching: I find it’s not working to watch movies or TV shows right now. I need the time and the mental space for writing. I did watch several Nature episodes: one on the American ocelot, one on woodpeckers, and one on pandas.

Hope you’re feeling better after the booster. Enjoy your Flamecraft game and goodies. Nice books this week, I’m a fan of Mary Balogh’s.

I got my Flamecraft package recently, too! I didn’t get the game itself, though: I got the Bread Dragon plush and the art book. I’m super happy with them though, and am looking forward to reading the book! (The plush is already supervising my hoard from the top of my jewelry chest. Being a bread dragon, though, he might end up moving to the kitchen.)
