 My Week

I’ve been working (a lot), spinning, and doing a little desultory bookshelf purging this week. Other than that, it’s been uneventful, at least for me. The week has been a lot harder on people I care about. Several friends and acquaintances have been going through really tough times recently, involving  death or serious illness in their families. My heart goes out to all of them. There is so little I or anyone can do in those situations, but pray and let them know I care. (Though of course I stand ready to help out with meals, transportation, etc. if needed.)

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I finished A Scandal in Battersea (Mercedes Lackey) and read both Tempests and Slaughter (Tamora Pierce) and The Woman in the Water (Charles Finch, reviewed here.) Both the Lackey and Finch books came from the library, but the Tamora Pierce was a Christmas gift (or rather, the preorder was.) I also started The Slow Regard of Silent Things, which I’ve been saving because I didn’t know when we would get another Patrick Rothfuss novel. (I still don’t, but I decided to read it anyway.) All this means that I’m doing rather better on the Take Control of Your TBR Pile challenge; I’ve read six books from my TBR pile, so I’ve essentially met my goal.

Listening to: I finished my Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows relisten (which had me in tears, as usual!), and started the short but charming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, read by David Tennant (a Christmas gift.) I’m debating what to listen to when I finish it. I’m torn between relistening to Tamora Pierce’s Immortals quartet (since I’ve just read Tempests and Slaughter, which is a prequel of sorts), or trying something new. Among the other contenders are Trever Noah’s Born a Crime, which my husband got for Christmas; The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes; or Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier.

Watching: We finally finished the first season of Star Trek:Discovery, which was excellent. We’re almost done with Father Brown season 5. There is a season 6, but I don’t think it’s on Netflix yet, so we’ll have to wait.

    It’s important to have the support of good friends 🙂
    Enjoy your books, I love HP too. I re-read the series twice. I’ll have to look up Star Trek: Discovery.

      ST: Discovery was excellent, once I got over being irked about the Klingon redesign. The only way to watch it is to subscribe to CBS All-Access streaming, though—at least in the US. I gather it’s available on Netflix in some other countries.

    So many good books. I liked Tempests and Slaughter, it’s a good beginning. I love Harry Potter and I need to read the Rothfuss books. I hope you have a great week!

      I liked Tempests and Slaughter too, though the story arc felt a little weak for a Pierce book. But I’m looking forward to the next book(s) and more of the young Arram/Numair, Varice, and Ozorne. She’s doing a great job of showing hints of each character’s adult personality as we know them from the Immortals quartet, while still showing how they were such good friends.

    I love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – especially with David Tennant’s narration. Though to be fair I’d love just about anything David Tennant narrates! I’m sorry about your loved ones. It is hard to know what to do when those around us are having such a rough time. Enjoy your reading and your spinning! Have a great week!

      It was your review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that made me want to listen to it! I read it as a child and remembered it was different from the movie, but didn’t remember much else about it.
