 My Week

I’m back! You may have noticed I didn’t post at all between March 19 and March 28. I was working on an index that just wouldn’t quit. It wasn’t difficult, just densely packed with lots and lots of information. I couldn’t really afford the time for blogging until I got it done. I finally turned it in at the end of the week. Now I’m looking forward to a little time off. Off from indexing, anyway; the next project comes in about a week and a half. But I’ve got plenty to do before then, from overdue housework and decluttering, to knitting and spinning… and blogging!

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I had very little time to read over the last two weeks — at least, to read for fun! I continued my Nora Roberts binge, finishing The Collector (a reread) and then Birthright (a first-time read for me, and eligible for The Backlist Reader Challenge.) And I read Stephanie Lauren’s latest book, A Conquest Impossible to Resist, which was a bit of a disappointment. (review)  I’m still slowly making my way through First Rider’s Call.

Listening to: I finished listening to Something Wonderful, a history of Rodgers and Hammerstein and their musicals. Since this is the audiobook version, it would have been a natural fit to include at least snippets of all the e songs discussed in the book, but I assume that copyright made that too expensive. So Mr. Bookwyrm ripped all the shows that we own recordings of, and I put them in my iTunes so I could stop and listen to the music as I went along. Now that I’m done with that book, I’m listening to a short children’s classic: Mary Poppins. It is decades since I read the books, and I’d forgotten some bits, so it’s fun to revisit it.

Watching:  We finished Eureka, Season 2!. Hopefully this week we can we start Star Trek: Discovery, Season 2. And we’ll be continuing with Eureka as well, of course.

    YAY! Welcome back! Glad you got your indexing done and are back to doing all the fun stuff! lol
    A friend of mine was a sound editor on Eureka, I have always wanted to watch that.

      Eureka is so much fun! One of the things I like best about it is that, although there’s often some interpersonal conflict between characters, at its heart the show is about cooperation. Rarely does one person singlehandedly save the day; usually, the solution is found by two or more people working together. And the people in the show are unabashedly smart. It’s not at all like Star Trek in plot, but it’s not dissimilar in the way the ensemble cast works together, and in its overall optimism about both science and human nature. (Plus, it’s often funny.)

      I’m subject to the perfectionist’s bane: the persistent feeling that if you can’t get it done right (which I often interpret as “all at once”), why start? I know that’s a ridiculous way to feel, and I’m really trying to overcome it. Doing a little everyday makes so much sense, logically; it’s just been hard to convince my gut of that. But I’m trying!

      Indexing can be a lot of work, and sometimes a lot of hassle, but it’s almost always interesting as well. I’m lucky that I’m able to work in a field where I constantly get to explore new (to me) subjects and ideas. But I’m looking forward to the break, and to fitting in some “me time” for creativity and health.

      I loved the first season. It’s just been tough to start the second season, remembering how intense season 1 was and knowing how much work I had to finish. I’ve found it easier to save shows like Discovery for times when my workload is a little lighter!

    I’m on a bit of a Nora Roberts binge too! I got Birthright on audio and I’m looking forward to it. It’s not a first time read but I remember so little about it it might as well be! I just listened to Dark Witch by Roberts. I was a bit meh about it when I first read it but I loved it in audio! I just bought the rest of the trilogy in audio and can’t wait to continue. Hope you’re having a great week!

      I loved Dark Witch; I should see if my library has those on audio. I love listening to books I’ve already read, because if I tune out for a minute or two, I know what I missed.

    I love Terry Pratchett. He was local to where I live now so it was almost obligatory to have read him but his books are so amusing it was no hardship, lol.
