My Week

It’s been one of those weeks of ordinary, everyday ups and downs. Our wonderful neighbor was so excited about his new riding mower (inherited from his in-laws) that he mowed our lawn as well as his own—bless him! I met my personal spinning goals for April. We’re battling ants again, but I think we’re winning, so that’s hopeful. We discovered a slow leak around the kitchen sink drainpipe, and had to have the plumbers in to fix it… but they were able to send someone the same day, and it’s done, so that’s as much positive as negative. I was planning to go to Maryland Sheep & Wool (a fiber festival) yesterday, but a combination of a sore throat and too much to do kept me home instead. But one of my chorus families generously gave me the wool from their 4H lamb, so I will get my first experience of washing a fleece and carding it!

The spring concert for my children’s and youth choruses is next Saturday. I still have to finish designing and printing the program, and I’ve got indexing work to do also, so I will be a busy beaver this week.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  I continued my Mary Jo Putney “Lost Lords” rereading binge with Nowhere Near Respectable, No Longer a Gentleman, Sometimes a Rogue, Not Quite a Wife, and Not Always a Saint, some of which I’ve reviewed in previous years. (Click title links for reviews, if you’re interested.) I’m almost finished with Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia Wrede. First Rider’s Call is on semi-hiatus for the time being, since I seem to be in more of a historical mood.

Listening to: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, read by Anne Hathaway

Watching: Star Trek: Discovery Season 2,  Eureka Season 3

I had preordered six early Dick Francis books that were re-released as ebooks this week. The Goodreads pages for the Kindle editions don’t have cover photos, and they need to be tied in to the other editions of the books and have a few other minor tweaks done to them. I’m a GR librarian (volunteer), so I can do that… but I didn’t discover the problem until last night, when I was too tired to fix more than two of them. Besides the two pictured above, I bought Enquiry, Knockdown, Smokescreen, and Rat Race. I’ll fix their Goodreads pages as soon as I can, assuming another librarian doesn’t get to them first. The ebook publisher, Canelo, is also coming out with more early and mid-career Francis mysteries soon, which makes me very happy. I own all my favorites in paperback, but for some inexplicable reason, the print seems to have shrunk in recent years LOL!

    Ugh, ants! We have loads of them in random places around the house. We put out traps and my husband is constantly spraying Raid, but it sometimes seems as randomly as they show up, they disappear.

    We get ants from time to time – but I use a trick my gran taught me. They won’t cross a white chalk line…

    You mentioning the Dick Francis books reminds me of when they reran the early serialised works on Radio 4 a number of years ago. It was a delight to hear storytelling from another era when all the accents were so frightfully proper.

      Interesting! I’m not sure I can draw a white chalk line around the whole house, though… 😉

      I didn’t know about the BBC serial radio versions. What fun! I’ll have to see if I can find them online or at the library.
