The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books!

Last Week

It’s been a challenging week. First, my indexing job has been tougher and more time-consuming than I anticipated. And then on Thursday, my stepmom called to say my 90-year-old dad had had a heart attack the night before, and was in the hospital. I was a wreck the rest of the evening and a lot of Friday, and couldn’t work at all, but Friday and Saturday’s news was reassuring, thank goodness. He’s still in the hospital under observation, and may need a pacemaker, but it looks like he will be OK.

They live almost 2000 miles away, and it has been hard not to be able to jump on a plane to be with him. But of course the pandemic makes that unwise, and hospital visiting rules wouldn’t let me see him anyway. But it’s a good hospital, and he’s in good spirits, considering. He is looking forward to going home. He and my stepmom (also 90) are still living independently, driving, and active in their church (until the pandemic began, at least.) I hope they can go on doing so for years to come.

5:40 PM: Edited to Add: The cardiologist discharged Dad today and he is home! He has several new meds to replace the old one, and they will hold off on the pacemaker idea for now. He will see a cardiologist when they return to their regular home in a few weeks (they’ve been down at their winter home) and discuss a pacemaker, but it sounds like that’s not an urgent decision. He’s very happy to be home, and I’m relieved that they felt he was well enough to go home. I really wasn’t expecting that for another couple of days.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I paused my rereading of Mary Stewart’s The Ivy Tree temporarily, and started an ARC of The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis. But in all the worry over my dad, I turned instead to a childhood favorite, Linnets and Valerians by Elizabeth Goudge. (Click titles to view on Goodreads.)

Listening: I am listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Watching: I rewatched Five Red Herrings and Murder Must Advertise, two of the Lord Peter Wimsey miniseries starring Ian Carmichael. I was going to start the final one with Carmichael in it, The Nine Tailors, but it has a dying father in it and this is not the best time for that, so instead I started the other Lord Peter Wimsey series, with Edward Petherbridge as Lord Peter; I’m partway through Strong Poison.

    So sorry to hear about your dad! It’s hard when you can’t be with them at times like these. Hope he continues to recover and is able to return home soon. Hang in there!

      Thank you, Lark. It’s tough not being able to go, but at least both Dad and my stepmom understand and agree that it’s not a good idea. And it does look like he’ll be able to go home this week, which is really encouraging.

      I’m so sorry to hear about your dad! It’s always hard for soemthing like this to happen and covid just makes it so much harder. I hope he continues to recover well and you’ll get to see him in good health before too long. Good luck with the indexing job! Hugs!

    I hope things go well for your dad! I look forward to The Summer Deal but plan to review the audio version. My mom was at home and driving until she broke her hip at the beginning of 2019. I worry about her being in a nursing home but when I talk to her she’s fine and socially distanced.

    Oh, my goodness, your poor dad! I’m glad he’s in good spirits and recovering. That is one of the hardest things right now, that you can’t just visit family even when you really need to.

      I just found out that they sent him home today! They decided to wait on the pacemaker for a few weeks, and see how the new medications do. (I think they are also trying to minimize hospital stays to reduce the chance of contracting Covid-19.) I am relieved, and hoping he doesn’t have any more issues for a looong time.

    *HUGS* I’m glad your dad is doing better, what a scare! It really is upsetting not to be with our loved ones right now when something happens. Take care of yourself and good luck with the indexing.

    I’m so sorry to hear about your father but am glad he’s doing well. I can’t imagine how terrifying this was for your whole family. You did get some fabulous books though. I love the cover for the Thayne book (and that should be fantastic escapist read!) and Deanna Raybourn is always a win. I hope this week is much better and calmer.

    I know it had to be scary to get that news, but I’m glad to hear that things are looking much better for your dad. That’s the pits about the added stress of the indexing job and hope that starts to change soon. Yay to Harry Potter and Jill Shalvis! Sending some air hugs your way! RO
