Last Week

Wow, it’s hot! It’s 97° F here, and headed toward 100°—and the humidity makes it feel at least ten degrees hotter. Other than that, it’s been a pretty normal week: mostly indexing, some knitting and spinning. The excitement came Friday, with the news that our niece, whose baby was due in August, was headed to the hospital with very high blood pressure. The doctors decided to induce, and on Saturday morning, her baby was born: a little girl, over a month early, tiny but healthy. Our niece’s blood pressure is still up, though, so your prayers and healing thoughts would be appreciated!

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading:  I read The Vanishing Man, another excellent mystery by Charles Finch. This book deals in part with Shakespeare, a subject I find endlessly fascinating, which added an extra fillip to my enjoyment. I also read The Hills Have Spies and Eye Spy by Mercedes Lackey, and The Beguilement of Lady Eustacia by Stephanie Laurens. Now I’m read The Dog Who Lost His Bark by Eoin Colfer. I requested it thinking it would be a picture book, since it’s illustrated by P.J. Lynch, but it’s more of an early MG chapter book with pencil illustrations–and absolutely charming. And I need to get back to Rebel (Beverly Jenkins, ARC).

Listening: Having finished The 101 Dalmations last weekend (review), I started listening to Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.  As an introvert myself (though one who has learned to fake extroversion when needed), so far I find it interesting, but mostly a reinforcement of things I already knew or intuited. This week, I may alternate chapters with  A Natural History of Dragons, A Wind in the Door, or some other fiction book, depending on how well Quiet keeps my attention.

Watching: Still watching season 4 of Eureka; we’re more than half-way through.

I bought Three Mages and a Margarita on the recommendation of Nicci at Sunny Buzzy Books, who says she’s “obsessed” with this urban fantasy series and has recently been re-reading them. She gave this one 4 stars, but her rave review reads more like 4.5 or 5 stars.

The Stephanie Laurens was on preorder. The other books were all on sale, and most of them are in series I want to read, or (in the case of Shelved Under Murder), read as an ARC and wanted to own. “Articulated Restraint” is a long short story in the Lady Astronaut series.

    I literally squealed in happiness when I saw you’d purchased Three Mages… I gave this one 4 stars because it’s the introduction. It takes a little bit for everything to take off (but is still fun) the next three books are 5 stars for me. 😉

    Wow, nice haul this week! I hope you enjoy the Wayward Children series when you get to them. And Three Mages and a Margarita is a super cute title! I’ll have to check that one out.
