September 8, 2019 Sunday Post 15

The Sunday Post is hosted by the wonderful Kimberly, the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news, recap the past week, take a look ahead, and showcase our new treasures—I mean books! This week, I’m also linking to Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Tynga’s Reviews) and It’s Monday! What Are You Reading (hosted by The Book Date.)

Last Week

I made some changes to my hosting agreement that should save me money, but resulted in a forced update to the new WordPress “Gutenberg” editor… something I had been avoiding since it came out. The new editor is going to take some getting used to, and may result in some changes in the blog’s appearance as I become more familiar with what I can and can’t do with the new “block editor” features.

On first acquaintance, I’m not a fan, but it may grow on me. One thing I’ve already noticed is that I can no longer force the text editor or WISYWIG editor to add an empty line between sections of text. In the old WordPress, I could do that by inserting the html code c; in the text editor where I wanted a blank line, but that’s not working in Gutenberg. That means that posts like this one, with a lot of sections, are going to look more crowded together, until I can find a workaround.

What I’m Reading/Watching

Reading: I reread Uhura’s Song (Janet Kagan) for the first time in 8 or 9 years, and started rereading Fortune’s Fool (Mercedes Lackey.) I’m still reading the second Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James mystery, All Shall Be Well (Deborah Crombie; library), as well as The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins (ARC.)

Listening to: I’m nearly finished with Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. I’ve also been listening to film music on Pandora, while I work around the house, and to “classical focus” playlists on Spotify while I work on an index.

Watching: We rewatched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy over the last eight days (extended version, of course!) about 2 hours each night. (One disc per night, since we have the old DVD special editions.)

How fun rewatching the complete Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’ve been wanting to that with the Harry Potter movies, but my husband is not a fan. LOL!
Have fun with your new books. Happy Reading! 😉

I’ll probably do a HP rewatch sometime this fall. We seem to watch it about once a year. 🙂 Mr. Bookwyrm isn’t quite the fan I am, but he does enjoy them, I think.

Maybe since I haven’t been faithfully on your blog like I should I don’t notice anything different but hope you get use to the new version of things. 🙂

Love your book haul! I love Jim Butcher! I almost picked up some Dick Francis at the used bookstore as I was curious but maybe next time. This time was more of a horror run…lol.

Have a great week and happy reading!

This post was started in the old editor and finished in Gutenberg’s “Classic” editor, so the only real difference is that the white space between sections (or beige space, really!) disappeared. We’ll see what happens as I play around with the “block editor.” 🙂

I’ve been a fan of Dick Francis since my twenties. His books are really good, although of course you have to remember that many were written before cell phones and the internet. Some of my favorites are Break In and its sequel, Bolt; Nerve; Straight; The Edge; and The Danger.

WordPress freaks me out. I know it’s much more versatile than blogger but it just seems so complicated! Good luck getting a hang of it.

I love the LOTR extended editions. We typically rewatch around Christmastime.

It’s always tough learning a editor. But WordPress has been worth it to me because of the Ultimate Book Blogger plugin, which I love.

I hope the new editor grows on you. I am afraid I am not at all familiar with it. I hope you enjoy your reading! The Book Charmer is on my TBR pile and I am looking forward to reading it. Have a wonderful week, Lark!

Thank you for the headsup… I’m still clinging to the older version of WordPress as I don’t do change very well and hate the thought of having to cope with Gutenberg. I’m interested to see that you’ve got hold of some Dick Francis thrillers – I recall hearing these on the radio.

Good luck with the new WordPress editor (or with switching back to the old one, if that’s possible and desired). I hated it when I tried it. I was very excited about it, and wrote several posts using it, but I had so much less control over everything that I switched back and won’t update until I absolutely have to.
