When I thought about this list, the books that first jumped to mind were fantasy books (or in the case of Hobbit Virtues, fantasy-adjacent.) And that makes sense, when I think about it. I have always loved fantasy, but for some reason, over the last four or five years, I haven’t read that much new fantasy. I did read fantasy, but mostly I just reread old favorites. Recently, though, my enthusiasm for new-to-me fantasy has been rekindled, so I hope to catch up on some of these books this year.
The books on my list are far from the only books I was eager to get, but haven’t yet read. I have over two bookcases of unread books! (I need to prune them a bit; there are a few I will probably never read, so someone else should have the pleasure of owning them.) But as I said, the fantasy books really stood out, in part because I’ve actually started reading new fantasy again. Until a week ago, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue would also have been on my list, but I finished it on Saturday… and loved it.
What books are still languishing on your shelves, even though you were excited to read them? And do they fall in a particular genre, or are they across several genres?

I’m in the process of downsizing to a home that is half the size of this one, so I’ve had to do a major purge of my book collection. It’s amazing how many of my books were in the “I’m never actually going to read this” category. It felt good to donate them so someone else can enjoy them and now my book collection is much more curated.

Oh you have some gems here! I LOVED The Dreamer’s Pool and that whole trilogy, A Darker Shade of Magic is also excellent. A Bright & Breaking Sea was an unexpected pleasure with a strong woman and humor. I also enjoyed Spinning Silver.

The Raven Heir is on my owned TBR list as well, but it’s too new to have made the cut of my ten oldest, so it’s not in my post this week. 😉 And now I’m really curious about Hobbit Virtues! (Helped by the fact that I am currently listening to Andy Serkis narrate The Hobbit… it’s been way too long since I’ve re-read this book, but I’m glad I got the audio. Serkis does a wonderful job with it!)

These do look great, and I have some of them on my TBR, but I’ve only read Spinning Silver. I’ve gotten away from reading new fantasy in recent years too, I don’t know why. I almost never buy those books now, I only get them from the library. What I do have unread on my shelves are a number of nonfiction books I seem to get on the mistaken assumption that just by owning a book I will absorb its contents. Plus foreign-language books I think I’ll read, but don’t, upon something of the same principle (i.e. owning a book in a foreign language means I am learning that language.) Hope you’ll get to some of these in good time!
