Books I Can’t Wait to Read
The Relentless Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal (July 14.) The first two books in the Lady Astronaut series were amazing! They pretty much topped my 2018 Top 10 list. I’ve been eagerly (impatiently!) waiting for the third book ever since.
The Ship of Shadows by Maria Kuzniar (July 16.) Honestly, I’m mainly going on Stephanie Burgis’s recommendation here, but she has never steered me wrong! (Note: As far as I can tell, it will only be available as an ebook in the US, but will be published in paperback in the UK. I ordered a paperback copy from Book Depository.)
Tea and Treachery by Vicki Delany (July 28.) I really enjoy the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mysteries, so I’m looking forward to this tea-themed series debut by the same author.
Death at High Tide by Hannah Dennison (August 18.) I loved Dennison’s other mystery series, so I’m excited to see what she will do with this series set on in the Scilly Islands.
Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh (August 25.) Balogh is one of my auto-buy authors. This is book #8 in the Westcott series; I’ve been waiting for Jessica’s story almost since book #1.
A Dance with Fate by Juliet Marillier (September 1.) I loved The Harp of Kings, so I’m excited for book #2 in the Warrior Bards series.
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix (September 22.) The blurb describes this book as “…magical fighting booksellers who police the mythical Old World of England when it intrudes on the modern world.” In London. And there’s a quest. Sign me up!
Once Dishonored by Mary Jo Putney (September 29.) Putney is another of my auto-buy authors. I can’t wait to read this — especially given the cross-dressing heroine on the cover.
Cinders and Sparrows by Stephan Bachman (October 13.) The premise of this middle-grade novel grabbed me, and so did the comparison to Diana Wynne Jones.
The Awakening by Nora Roberts (November 24.) A new fantasy series from Roberts is always cause for celebration, especially when it’s called the Dragon Heart Legacy.
Jolene by Mercedes Lackey (December 1.) Lackey’s newest Elemental Masters novel is a retelling of the little-known fairytale “The Queen of the Copper Mountain,” set in Tennessee coal country. Based on the title, I suspect Lackey may also be referencing one or more country-music songs, which will be an interesting departure for the series. Lackey has been hit or miss for me recently, but I’m still intrigued.
Books I’m Also Excited About
Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim (July 7.) It’s kind of strange to be anticipating this book, since I haven’t even read the first one yet… but they both sound so good!
A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik (September 29.) I’m on the fence about this one, and I don’t want to be. I love Naomi Novik, and her books are usually amazing, but this series sounds a bit dark and grim for my taste.
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (October 13.) Another series that sounds good. But I haven’t read Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning and its sequel yet, and I feel I should read them first.

I still need to read the first Lady Astronaut book, but once I do I have a feeling I’ll be anticipating all future books right along with you! 🙂

I think you will really love the Lady Astronaut books! As for Lackey, I know what you mean. I still read the Elemental Masters and Valdemar books, but they’ve been pretty average for a while.

Best of luck with the Lackey books. I still hope they’ll get better again, but I just don’t trust them enough to read them myself with so many other books I’m more interested in. Still… maybe some day…

Yes, she is! I haven’t read her latest fantasy trilogy yet. I was waiting until they were all published, and then the pandemic hit and I really didn’t want to read a series that starts out with a magical and virulent pandemic… But the new series looks good.
